Millington, the “Flag City of Tennessee” is a Shelby County city 20 minutes away from Memphis. It has a small-town vibe with its own unique attractions. It was once part of the Millingtons’ vast property until they donated a portion of it to be made into a town named after them. The original Baptist Church was established here in 1888 and the first businesses started in 1890. The military established its presence in 1917 starting with the construction of Park Field, a pilot training facility. The town prospered as more military bases were built like the NAVSUPPACT Naval Station. USA Stadium built in 1986 drew worldwide recognition by hosting the International Baseball games. 1. Go bird-watching at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

Meeman-Shelby is selected as an Important Bird Area in 2006 by the Audubon Society. The park is 13,476 acres (5,454 hectares) of bottomland hardwood forest located 13 miles (21 kilometers) from northern Memphis and edges the Mississippi River and Tupelo and Bald Cypress Swamp. It’s a sanctuary for various wildlife including over 240 kinds of birds and features hiking trails over 20 miles (32.1 kilometers) long. Aside from birdwatching and hiking, it’s ideal for fishing parties and family-style camping. The facilities are located along Poplar Tree Shore surrounded by various trees. It can fit up to 140 people making it ideal for group youth camps. There are 49 campsites all over the park and 2-bedroom cabin accommodations that fit up to 6 people.

Jones Orchard offers unique and exciting farm fun! This not-so-typical farm is a 600-acre (243 hectares) property owned by the Jones family who became popular for producing high-quality fruits particularly peaches. They have been providing the areas of Mid-south and Memphis with their fresh produce for over 70 years. You can choose from different locations where you want to buy their products. They currently have three locations where you can pick your own fruit, two roadside markets, and three booths in different farmers’ markets. Aside from fresh fruits, they also sell homemade jellies and jams. They have their own fall harvest celebration featuring three haunts and a huge corn maze the children and adults will enjoy.

6. Watch the races at Memphis International Raceway

Get your adrenaline fix and watch the exciting races at MIR! Memphis International Raceway (MIR), formerly Memphis Motorsports Park, is an auto racing park located 10 miles (16.09 kilometers) away from Southern Millington across Loosahatchie River. In 1987, the facility opened with just a 2.9-kilometer (1.8 miles) road course and a drag strip. In 1998, it hosted the Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series, and ASA Late Model Series using its newly built tri-oval short track. It also features a 1,340-meter (4,400 feet) drag strip that serves as the venue for races like the IHRA World Finals and Nitro Jam, PDRA events, and others. You have to buy an Event Ticket to be able to enter the facility or enroll in one of their driving schools. Playhouse 51 is the community theater group of Millington with its headquarters in Harvell Civic Center. This non-profit organization aims to provide the community with top quality family entertainment while supporting the arts. Join as a member and you get discounted prices on all their social events, workshops, and tickets to their performances. You are also eligible to run for a position in the organization once you become a member. You must be 18 years old and above to qualify for the membership. 8. Spend a day out at Aycock Park


Aycock Park is where the community gathers for events and for special occasions like birthdays and family reunions. The public park features vast open spaces carpeted with green grass, a half-mile (0.8 kilometer) tree-shaded walking trail, and several amenities enjoyed by people of all ages. People can take leisurely strolls, go jogging, go brisk walking, do outdoor exercises, or walk around to get around the park and reach one place to the other. It also features a gazebo, playground with play equipment for kids, picnic tables, and tennis courts. You can rent the pavilion for half a day or a full day’s rental for an event or party.

Alison’s Alcove Antique Mall and Consignment Shop is the best source for antiques and pre-loved items. The shop was established in 1984 and has been serving the community of Millington for more than 20 years. It underwent some remodeling and re-opened in 2019 with a bigger and better store. They sell a wide selection of antiques - some of which are hard to find. Aside from cute little home accessories, they also sell antique and used furniture all in good condition. Drop by their store if you feel like antiquing and you’ll find at least one item that will liven up your home.

10. Get active at Lions Park

There are no lions in Lions Park! It’s one of the two public parks where the residents hang out to relax and exercise. It features a vast area covered in grass and surrounded by tall trees. It has a 5-kilometer (3.10 miles) jogging path where you can do your practice runs, jog, and engage in outdoor exercise routines, and a small playground with large inflatable play equipment that is safe for kids. For adrenaline junkies, there is a tall four-sided climbing wall in the middle of the field where you can practice rock climbing and rappelling. The park is open from morning until evening and is ideal for family outings, picnics, events, picnics, weddings, and other outdoor activities.

At Old Millington, you can enjoy drinking world-class wine with good music. This not-so-typical winery offers not just a wide selection of vino for tasting and drinking. They also host a variety of events like fundraisings with live outdoor music during the afternoons. You are allowed to bring your own picnic baskets, lawn chairs, pop tents, and blankets during the event. If you want to sample the drinks, you will have to pay 5 USD for a wrist ticket to be able to enter the tasting room. You are allowed to taste up to four variants of their award-winning wines.

12. Watch some baseball games at USA Stadium Complex

The USA Stadium is one of the finest outdoor sports complexes in Millington. It was a baseball stadium used as the training ground of the USA baseball team for the Olympics from 1986 to 1996. It hosted the USA Baseball Tournament 1999 Conference and the baseball team of the University of Memphis. Currently, the complex boasts world-class facilities for sports like rugby, baseball, tractor or truck pulling, and rodeos. It is also used as an entertainment venue for events like concerts, festivals, fairs, and corporate and private gatherings.

Oak Park is a public park on Church Street near Baker Community Center. It is open to everyone from all walks of life from morning until night. Its lush surroundings make it suitable for outdoor exercises and activities. There are two public tennis courts, though not lighted, is good enough for practice and simple tennis matches.
