Yunoyama Onsen in Mie prefecture’s Mie-gun Komonocho is a hot spring town with a history of over 1300 years. On the left slope of Mt Gozaisho, known for the spectacular Gozaisho Ropeway, is Mitakigawa River with plenty of hotels and inns along the river banks. The hot spring water there is rich in radium. In this article I’ll introduce one Japanese style inn called “Sanpouen” located near the upper stream of Mitakigawa River.

Sanpouen inn in Mie prefecture’s Mie-gun Komonocho is surrounded by the Suzuka mountain range and lots of nature. Many people who want to enjoy hot springs and whole families come here all year round. Mitakigawa River runs nearby, so this place is ideal for playing in the river in summer. Nearby are popular sightseeing spots like Gozaisho Ropeway, known for its massive steel tower, and Mitakeji Temple with its love legend of folded paper cranes. Sanpouen has 8 Japanese style rooms. It’s very cosy and the service is superb. All rooms have air-conditioning, a bathroom and a toilet. Some even have an open air bath! Leave your car at the parking lot and climb up the atmospheric stone-paved road to be welcomed by the hostess.
Top-class food to relish!
At Sanpouen you can eat first-class food which uses fresh seafood from Ise Bay and vegetables and spices from Suzuka mountain range. The staff will serve appetizers, sashimi, tempura, roast beef, flame-broiled fish and other seasonal dishes directly in your room. In winter you can try the local delicacy made of wild boar meat. There are several accommodation options at Sanpouen and the food menu changes according to your booking. You can make a reservation for a beef steak from Mie prefecture when you book your room.
The private bath has the warmth of cypress trees
The hot spring water in Yunoyama Onsen is rich in radium and good for treating nerve pain, muscular pain, joint pain, stiff shoulders, sensitivity to cold and exhaustion. It has a general positive effect on your health.
In Sanpouen there are two large baths for men and women, two open-air baths and a private bath! The private one can be rented for 50 minutes. Ask the hostess if it’s free when you arrive. If it is, book it and enjoy soaking in Yunoyama Onsen’s hot water. You can do it not only in the evening, but also in the morning. There’s a special room where you can rest after your bath. Here you can receive a massage from a massaging machine, have a drink or read some manga.
The breakfast is delicious!
Breakfast is served in the dining hall. It consists of many different items and it’s so delicious that your day will begin on a happy note. You can specify the time of the breakfast as long as it’s after 7 am.
Oishi Park is close to Sanpouen
A red bridge will catch your attention near Sanpouen – that’s Oishi Park. It’s known for having Japan’s largest granite stone where the historical character Oishi Kuranosuke from the 47 samurai story stood. There are many other giant and strangely shaped stones with their own legends.
You can go down to the river and listen to the murmuring of the stream. In the summer this is a great spot to play in the water. Bring your swimming suit when you visit this place in the warm season.
