With hundreds of hotels to choose from in Santorini, finding the right one for your comfort (and bank account) can require some serious time and effort. Most people are familiar with the hotels hanging precariously from the cliffs of the caldera (charging astronomical prices) with sweeping views of the Aegean and surrounding islands, but very few know about an affordable little hideaway at the foot of one of the most beautiful villages on the island.

Stay in the stunning fishing port of Amoudi Bay!

Looking down at Amoudi Bay from the marble steps from Oia

Located directly 270 winding steps below Oia, Amoudi Bay is a small fishing port that consists of only five fresh fish restaurants, two boat rental offices, and the unique Amoudi Bay Villas. Tucked into the hillside of the red lava rock cliffs just below one of the most famous villages in all of Santorini, Amoudi Villas is a perfectly peaceful alternative to staying in the overpopulated hotels on the cliffs of the caldera.

Each morning, you’ll wake up to the sounds of the ocean waves lapping at the boats in the harbor, along with the sounds of the occasional fisherman hauling in his early morning spoils on shore to sell to the restaurant owners. Sometimes, you’ll hear a boat captain softly playing traditional Greek music from his boat, as he readies himself for work.

The hotel has only six rooms, all of which has their own private balcony. Each room has a full view of the Aegean and the neighboring islands. Prices range from 100-165 EUR (approximately 120-185 USD) per night, making it significantly more affordable than most hotels on the cliffs of the caldera.

Since the hotel is relatively small and private, away from the crowds, you’ll have the feeling of solidarity with the natural beauty of your surroundings. You’ll have direct access to many of the best swimming spots by simply walking down a short flight of stairs and jumping straight into the Aegean from the small pier located directly below the hotel. Each room has satellite TV, a safe deposit box, air conditioning (though you’ll prefer to leave your door open to let the cool ocean breeze fill the room at night) and kitchen facilities.

If you’d like to stay in relatively good shape during your holidays, you can hike the 270 steps up to the main village of Oia, or traverse the uphill switchback road leading into town. If you take the road, half way up you’ll find the path to the nice black pebble beach of Katharos, along with a beach bar offering cocktails and traditional Greek food.

For those truly looking for relaxation and minimal physical effort during your stay, there are donkey rides available after 11:00hrs, for 5 EUR (approximately 7USD), up the steep winding steps to Oia and taxis can be called to take you to the top of the hill.
