Paris is one of the most traveled-to destinations in the world. It is hard to imagine that such a well-known tourist destination would be friendly to the budget traveler, but lucky for us, Paris is shockingly budget friendly. From cheap eats to free museums, this guide is full of 7 things to do in Paris that will cost you 10 USD or less.
1. Enjoy a hot chocolate at Angelina’s (6.53 USD/6 EUR)
There is a reason Angelina’s has become a well-known name for people traveling to Paris. Everything they make is delicious. While their meals and pastries are fantastic, they are a bit on the pricy side. If you are on a budget, it is best to opt for a local spot with lower prices for your big meal. That being said, there is no reason to skip Angelina’s all-together. The one thing that is a must at Angelina’s is the hot chocolate. It is more expensive if you sit, so get it to go. It is arguably the best hot chocolate in the city.
2. Read where Orwell once read (free)
And Joyce, and Stein, and Kerouac… let’s just say this place has history. Shakespeare & Co. has the richest history of any bookstore in Paris. In the early days when it was on the other side of the city, it was where many writers from the Lost Generation got their start. Once it moved to its current location—across the river from the Notre Dame—it became home to the Beat Generation. The works that have come from this shop are legendary and it still hosts talks, writing workshops, and other opportunities for the literarily inclined.
3. Drink where Emerson once drank (3.27 USD/3+ EUR)
Café de Flore is just a few blocks from Shakespeare & Co. and it is a perfect place to sip on a cheap (yet lovely) glass of wine. Café de Flore and its neighbor, Les Deux Magots, are famous for the guests that used to pass through their doors. Oscar Wilde and Ralph Waldo Emerson are just two of the countless artists that found inspiration while enjoying a drink at these cafés.

4. See the current exhibit at the Petit Palais (free)
While the exhibit at the Petit Palais is always changing, it is also always free. The art that comes through the Petit Palais is engaging and thought-provoking, but the building itself is worth a visit regardless of the exhibit it houses. Make sure you check out their garden, a small courtyard that often features statues, and other interesting art installations.

5. Picnic the way the locals do (free)
On Friday and Saturday nights, grab a bottle of wine and head to the Pont Saint Michel. Okay, so technically this is not free if you do choose to get some wine, but the small fee is well worth the experience. All along the Seine, you will find groups of locals laughing and chatting over their drinks. It is a fantastic way to feel like a local and experience the magic that has made Paris so famous.
6. See how Paris has changed through the years (free)
One of the lesser-known museums in Pairs is the Museé Carnavalet. This museum is completely free and full of Parisian history. They have miniature models of the city prior to the reconstruction of Paris, full-scale remakes of rooms of Parisian figures such as Proust, outfits that model Paris’ ever-changing style, and much more. It’s an amazing museum to explore, and with a (zero) price like that, how can you resist?
7. Tour Victor Hugo’s old home (free)
Victor Hugo is one of Paris’ most loved historic figures. His home has been preserved and restored as much as possible to show what it probably looked like during his time in Paris. Besides seeing his house and room, you will learn about Hugo’s complex history; including the fact that he used to draw in addition to his writing!
See Paris for cheap!
Paris is a city full of wonders, and you don’t have to be rich to enjoy them. Those aware of Paris’ history know it has long been a haven to those living on a budget. It continues to offer plenty of amazing opportunities for the budget traveler.
