The Book Club offers an experience like no other: quirky, unusual, wacky and rather out-of-the-ordinary. Who would have thought that going out for a meal could be more than just about fantastic food and service? Well, the Book Club certainly offers you something on top and that’s an experience to remember. Located at 100-106 Leonard Street, London, EC2A 4RH it is easy to get to and is close to multiple public transportation lines.

An extraordinary Victorian warehouse

a unique venue for food and activities: the book club, london | an extraordinary victorian warehouse

When you think of an old Victorian warehouse, I bet you think of a rather dilapidated industrial establishment full of dire iron and steel works. So, who would think that such an establishment in East London could be converted into something quite extraordinary? Well, I’m here to report to you that such place exists and that’s the Book Club. It is layered with bespoke furniture, mosaics and graphic lighting features. In addition, there are regularly rotating exhibitions that adorn the walls.

The entrance itself is a piece of art with what appears to be a map showing you how much there really is to do at the Book Club. Table football or ping pong anyone?

The upstairs/ground floor is very open, airy and a comforting environment for you to relax on your own or meet with other people. The ground floor is well-lit due to the glass windows, which allows for natural light. This is the type of place where you can relax for hours, enjoy good food and have some “you” or “you and others” time without feeling like your table is being watched and you need to vacate it if you’re not ordering anything more. Food is one part of the Book Club; experience (which consists of many activities) is another part and a part that is definitely taken seriously!

Finger-licking fabulous food

a unique venue for food and activities: the book club, london | finger-licking fabulous food

Friendly and welcoming service combined with mouth-watering and finger-licking food is ready to hit your tastebuds. The different menus throughout the day are suitable for both meat-eaters and vegetarians.

I would have to recommend that you try the unconventional Cajun wedges with cheddar and sour cream; it was more of a jacket potato loaded with a delicious cheesy topping and creamy sour cream coupled with a tasty sweet chilli that gave it the right kick! The cost was also an absolute bargain as it was only 4 GBP (5 USD). I have to return to the Book Club to eat this again; it was that good!

The home baked nachos were tasty and included vegetarian chilli, melted cheddar and homemade salsa, sour cream and pickled jalapenos. Whilst the nachos could have been a bit crispier, one certainly does get value for money with the amount of toppings! The value for a small portion is 6 GBP (8 USD) and for a large, it is 12 GBP (16 USD).

Give me more red pepper aioli!

The star of the meal; however, was the vegetarian platter, which consisted of grilled halloumi cheese with Mediterranean vegetables, spiced couscous, falafels, marinated feta, olives with salsa, a red pepper aioli, hummus and garlic bread. It was flavourful and an utter delight to devour. I particularly liked the red pepper aioli with the garlic bread, which was fiery and delicious; an item that one must savour again. The cost of the platter is 12.50 GBP (16 USD); how can one resist with such a price?

With such brilliant food, you need a fabulous cocktail to sip and the cocktail menu at the Book Club is one that will make you chuckle! There are so many unusual drinks with quirky names that you will remember (especially for the next time you visit). I had to have the, “Don’t go to Dalston”, which was 8.20 GBP (11 USD) and consisted of raspberry puree shaken with lemon, sugar and green mark Vodka topped with cava. It was super sweet and a sure starter to a fantastic party.

Food and drink tends to be served upstairs; however, you can order drinks from downstairs too (which is convenient if you’re enjoying an event in the basement). Sip away and enjoy the constant entertainment and social events.
