Located right on the banks of the River Cher in France, the Château de Chenonceau is one of the most iconic in the Loire Valley. The castle was built from 1512 to 1522 on the grounds of an old mill. It was then expanded to span the entire length of the river. The Château de Chenonceau was designed in the mixture of late Gothic and early Renaissance style architecture. In 1840 it was declared an official historical monument and popular tourist destination, receiving over 800,000 visitors in 2007 alone. In 1913 the chateau was acquired by Henry Menier of the Menier family, who became famous for their high-quality chocolates. The family still owns the chateau to this day. The Château de Chenonceau is a beautiful place to visit, so check out these fine hotels and vacation rentals near Château de Chenonceau.
