The George S. Houston Historic District is located in Athens, Alabama. The town was founded in 1818 and there are five homes remaining from the old district. The Confederate Soldier’s Memorial is a statue that is just a 15 minute drive from the historic district. It was placed for the men who gave their lives during the Civil War in the south. Also, the Alabama Veteran’s Museum is situated very close to the statue. Here at the museum, they have information on local folks who have served in the military.
