5. Local gem with a view of Pearl Harbor (from 79 USD)

This studio suite is set in a quiet, local Hawaiian community, far from the maddening tourist crowd. On first sight, it reminds one of Lilo’s house in Lilo and Stitch. It’s a no-frills place for a couple really wanting to spend time away from the hectic city, with an idyllic view of the sunset at Pearl Harbor. The owners are travel fans as well, so they provide a fuss-free booking experience on their property. It comes with many basic amenities, and has beach gear like snorkels, beach mats, and boogie boards you can borrow. This place is a little farther from downtown and the Waikiki district, but if you want to spend a day at the beach, there are many buses there. There are no problems with late check in as the lock is a combo lock. If you wish to make your way down to the Pearl Harbor Memorial, it’s only 10 minutes away by car. Be assured that you won’t be late for your flight here, since the airport is only 5 minutes away by car as well.

Met Michael and Cristina briefly upon my arrival and felt comfortable immediately. The studio is charming with the only entrance being a double-pane sliding glass door with screen accessed by the porch/balcony. Public transit is nearby with access to major areas of the island. The area seems suburb/rural as you can be awakened or greeted by chicken(s) in the morning. Since I was from the area and understand big city life, ambient noises do not bother me as much… Mitch
