Ihlara Valley attracts hikers from all over and is the most popular hiking site in Turkey. The 328 foot (100m) deep canyon was formed thousands of years ago by the Meleniz River. The valley runs for about 9 miles (14km) between Ihlara Village and the Selime Monastery. While exploring the valley you will see ruins of the thousands of dwellings and over 100 churches carved out of caves. The churches feature beautiful, ancient paintings on the walls and ceilings. It’s definitely a must-see! About halfway through the valley is the village of Belisirma which offers a number of restaurants for you to rest and grab a bite before continuing on to the monastery.
