At a staggering height of 186 meters, the Kurobe Dam is the tallest dam in all of Japan. Constructed in 1963, it has since served as a major supplier of electricity to the neighboring region of Kansai, as well as a tourist attraction. Situated along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, the dam is part of a popular scenic tour along the Tateyama mountain range. Here, tourists can board a cable-car, or climb up to the observation deck. Here, they can marvel at the breathtaking view of the surrounding alpine forests. The dam is a mere bus ride away from other local attractions such as the Oyama Shrine, which is a fascinating temple that showcases a mix of Japanese and Chinese architectural design.
