The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany is an 18th-century neoclassical monument and has become one of the best-known landmarks in Germany. It is located in a historic part of the center at the junction of Unter den Linden, the famous boulevard of linden trees, and Ebertstraße, immediately west of the Pariser Platz. It is near the Reichstag building, which houses the German parliament. it once led directly to the Royal City Palace of the Prussian monarchs. The gate became a symbol of freedom during the Revolutions of 1989 when the Berlin wall was demolished and thousands of people gathered there to celebrate its fall on 9 November 1989. On 22 December 1989, the Brandenburg Gate border crossing was reopened. Today, the wall stands as a symbol of European unity and peace. When visiting the gate, pause at the “Raum der Stille” (Room of Silence) before crossing over to the other side. Two additional important landmarks nearby are the Pariser Platz with the “Akademie der Künste” (Academy of Arts) and the restored American embassy.
