Are you planning to visit Trowulan archaeological site anytime soon? The former capital city of a very prominent Majapahit kingdom in the 13th to 15th century has been one of the most visited destinations in East Java lately. Many travel agencies have included Trowulan and attractions around Mojokerto regency, such as Jolotundo shrine, on the destination list besides Mount Bromo. However, these areas aren’t well-developed and you can’t find decent places to eat and facilities (e.g. convenience store, drug store). For that reason, many visitors choose to stay in a hotel in Mojokerto city, 10 kilometers (6 miles) from these sites, as they are much easier to get to. Among the many hotels in the area, Raden Wijaya hotel is one of your best choices.

The newest hotel in the city

affordable comfort at raden wijaya hotel, mojokerto, indonesia | the newest hotel in the city

This hotel has become a favorite in Mojokerto ever since the opening in 2014, and especially on weekends, this occupancy rate is high. One of the reasons is everything in the hotel is brand new and in its best condition (e.g. new sofas, beds). Most other hotels in the city are outdated, and their facilities may not be as good as the brand new ones.

Comfy lobby

Everything in the lobby is clean and sparkling. This is a new hotel, there is no doubt about it! The lobby is air conditioned all day long, and there is fast Wi-Fi connection accessible from here. It’s nice to sit on one of the new soft sofas and spend some time in here!

Superb room amenities for USD 17

This hotel has a total of 30 rooms. All rooms come with air-conditioning, a plasma TV , and a private bathroom. Since this is a brand new hotel, the latex mattress is comfier than the one in most other hotels. (Imagine yourself asleep on a new latex mattress!). The bathroom has a hot shower, and you also will get bathroom apparatus, and a pair of slippers! The rates are incredibly cheap. It’s 17 USD for a superior room, 21 USD for deluxe, and 29 USD for VIP room! The rates include breakfast for two (mostly chicken fried rice and coffee or tea, delivered to your room) and the good news is, they accept VISA and Mastercard too! Wi-Fi is only accessible from the lobby area, so bring your own internet modem or Wi-Fi router if you need to access internet from your room.

Multi function hall

This hotel is also facilitated with a large multifunctional hall for meetings, seminars, and any other gatherings (it has the capacity of more than 300 people). If you are lucky, you may witness a Javanese wedding. You may not see the procession in the hall, but you can see the bride and groom when they enter the aisle inside the hall. You will notice that everything they wear has a golden floral decoration (this art is called batik). You will find the bride’s hair is very elegant because she wears flowery decorations on her plaited hair. Instead of a plain black coat with tie and trousers, you will find the bride wears a coat full of batik decoration and a ‘sarong’, a kind of long robe wrapped around the waist. It’s truly something you won’t see in every home country!

Located at the food street

located at the food street

Another of the reasons why this hotel is recommended is because it is located on a street with many ‘depots’ (Indonesian term for smaller restaurants), a coffee shop, and a convenience store named Indomaret (Indonesian version of a minimarket chain named Seven Eleven) that you can reach very easily on foot.

Right in front of the hotel is ‘Wong Solo’ fried chicken (Wong: Person, Solo: a city in central Java). This restaurant sells spicy barbecued chicken. Like most Indonesian foods, this chicken is very strong in flavor. Before deep frying the chicken, they marinate it with pepper, nutmeg, chilli, ginger, and kecap manis (thick sweet soy sauce), making it taste totally different from Kentucky Fried Chicken that you can also find in another part of this small city.

Less than 20 meters to the west, you will find Loodst coffee shop. The interior has a woody tone, and they put brown wallpaper on the walls, as well as often playing popular American music (e.g. Michael Jackson’s songs). The coffee shop features its own various styles of iced coffee, which many times the coffee maker use chocolate to make kinds of decoration on the beverage. Try their Iced Frappuccino Latte. It’s coffee and creamer, with a chocolate ice cream float. Now you know you can find this kind of creativity in the city!

2-star hotel, but the best in the city

This hotel was rated as a 2-star hotel, hence it doesn’t have a swimming pool and a garden. However, since there are no 3 or 4-star hotels in the Mojokerto city area, this is your best choice to stay in the city. This hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant either, but it’s not necessary as restaurants are within very close walking distances. This is simply one of your best choices for a hotel in the city!
