Roughly 9.2 kilometers (5.7 miles) north of Palolem Beach and located in southern Goa in India, this gorgeous beach is very much worth including in your holiday agenda. Agonda Beach with its sandy white sands and clear water is where mega-tourism doesn’t exist - it is the very definition of a relaxing and peaceful holiday getaway. It makes an excellent spot for outdoor holiday activities such as sunbathing, swimming, and jogging. It is one of the most amazing beaches in the country and in Asia. However, since the beach is not as popular as many other more familiar beaches in India, it might be a bit difficult to find your way here. As such you need a guide to Agonda Beach, Goa. You’ve come to the right place.
Things to do / Highlights
Check out these highlights of Agonda Beach so your precious holiday time is well-spent on discovering the best parts of the beach.
Take a leisure walk at the beach
Spend hours venturing around the beach by feet in the afternoon. Its picturesque landscape makes a perfect backdrop for a long sunset walk. Do check out the lines of hawkers and shopping stalls outside the coast area, you could get a good deal for merchandise if you’re a good haggler. If possible, visit the beach in the summer. You might be lucky enough to watch baby turtles hatch from their shells and slowly make their way to the sea. This beach truly embodies the romantic beauty of Goa in every inch of its soil.
Enjoy an Ayurvedic Massage
The Ayurvedic massage is iconic in India. There are plenty of spa centers available on the main road leading to the beach. however, we recommend you to choose the one with professionally qualified Ayurvedic therapists. After a long day walking on the beach, wouldn’t it be nice to have all your muscles in your body relaxed with a full body massage accompanied by serene music in a relaxing setting?
Explore Cabo de Rama Fort
At first, it might seem that the landmark doesn’t have much to offer besides remnants of what used to be a Portuguese fortress. But don’t let the view discourage you from visiting this historical site. The fort has seen some fierce battles between the kings of Soonda and the Portuguese. There was even a time in India’s history where this fort was used as a jail for political prisoners. The fort’s secluded location adds to its mysterious charm. Stand at the edge of the cliff to gaze at the unbroken panorama of Cabo de Rama beach and the Arabian Sea.
Travelers tips
Nearby businesses closing down
Nearing the end of last year and starting from this year in January, the businesses surrounding the coastal area - mainly those in the hospitality industry - were disrupted by the local government’s plan to clear the beach’s coast from premises that don’t comply with Coastal Regulation Zone Laws. The plan results in the demolition of some well-known restaurants and accommodations. Make sure to double-check the places in your itinerary to be sure that they are not among the list of buildings that have been shut down.
No mobile phone reception
There is little no to no network coverage at all in the beach area. As such gather as much information on the beach first before coming down here, to avoid getting lost.
Wheelchair accessibility
If you plan to use a wheelchair on the beach please be informed that the ground on the area might not be entirely level. Added to this, there are also very few pavements. As such, it might be difficult to operate a wheelchair here.
How to get there
Public transport
You can purchase the bus tickets to the beach via third-party websites. These websites may state that the approximate journey time to the destination is 12 to 16 hours (from Mumbai), however, the truth is the journey can be unpredictable and may even take up to almost a whole day. If you want to travel in comfort, choose buses that are equipped with single or double beds, though they are definitely costlier. Also consider buses with semi-sleeper seats, they are cheaper than buses with beds and still are more comfortable than the standard seats.
The alternatives to buses are trains. Two of the nearest train stations to Agonda Beach are Marago and Canacona/Chaudi. The former is located 20 minutes away from the south of Agonda whereas the latter is an hour away. A single journey from Marago to the beach will cost you roughly 300 INR (4 USD), and 800 INR (11.2 USD) from Canacona.
Private cars
Unless you bring along a local guide with you, it isn’t recommended for international tourists to drive on their own. Nevertheless, if you insist on renting a car, hire a driver with good knowledge of the area. The full address of this beach is South Goa District, Agonda, Goa 403001, India.
Taxis
If you’ve got approximately 2,000 INR (28 USD) to spend on transportation, then opt for taxis. They are the most convenient options to reach the beach, albeit the most expensive. The cost could be more or less depending on the kind of facilities you expect. These prepaid taxis can be ordered on the taxi booking counters at Goa’s Dabolim airport.
Parking information
Since the beach area is vast, there are a number of parking locations scattered around Goa. In Calangute, the car park is on the main road heading to the beach, in the opposite direction of your left hand, where a football field once was. Other locations are Baga, Morjim, and Ashwem. At each car park, usually there is a parking attendant. If he happens to be around, then it’s 30 INR (0.4 USD) for full-day parking.
