Located in the southwestern part of Rajasthan is the historic small town of Ahar. It is well-known for its connection to the royal family of Mewar, and its proximity to the city of Udaipur makes it a popular day-trip destination as well. And located in Ahar are the majestic clusters of cenotaphs built in the memory of the kings of Mewar, popularly known as Ahar Cenotaphs. Cenotaphs are essentially empty tomb monuments built in honour of a ruler or a person of significance. Ahar Cenotaphs were erected to mark the bravery of the kings of Mewar and resemble small canopy-like structures known locally as ‘chhatris’. There are 19 such chhatris here signifying the passing of 19 great Mewari kings that were constructed a few centuries ago. Architecture and history lovers can delight in admiring the traditional architecture and historical significance of the cenotaphs. To make the best of your time here, take a look at our guide to Ahar Cenotaphs, Udaipur.

Admire the striking architecture of the cenotaphs

Built in the traditional Rajput style of architecture, the majestic cenotaphs are a sight to behold. Bold columns, arched roofs, elevated platforms and intricately carved ceilings give the cenotaphs an air of quiet elegance. Similar to the temples of the 1550s, the cenotaphs are made from marble, making them a memorial truly fit for brave kings. A depiction similar to that of the Hindu deity Shiva can be seen inside the cenotaphs, where the king (Maharana) is seen with his wives, who used to immolate themselves on their husband’s funeral pyre in keeping with a ritual of those times. Swaroop Singh, Bhagwat Singh, Shambhu Singh, Sajjan Singh, Fateh Singh and Bhupal Singh are just some of the great kings of the Mewar dynasty who were cremated here.

Marvel at the astonishing cenotaph of Maharana Sangram Singh

Of all the 250 cenotaphs at Ahar, the one built in the memory of Maharana Sangram Singh is the most magnificent. It was constructed in 1734 and is astonishing in its sheer size and beauty. Supported by eight small pillars is an octagonal dome in the centre of the cenotaph, with an additional 56 pillars in the porch. It is a memorial to the king, Maharana Sangram Singh, and his 21 wives. This striking cenotaph is a must-visit for all architecture buffs. Its historical significance will also delight visitors who are interested in the history of the kings of Mewar.

Time your visit

The monsoon season from July to September can be humid. Thus, the best season to visit Ahar Cenotaphs is winter, from November to February. Early mornings and evenings are the ideal times to visit since the heat is not very harsh at those times of the day.

Visit Udaipur City Palace first

With its intricate connection to the Maharanas of Mewar, it is suggested that you pay a visit to Udaipur City Palace before visiting Ahar Cenotaphs. Checking out the palace first will give you sufficient background on the history of the Mewar dynasty and its kings, which will prove handy while exploring the cenotaphs at Ahar.

Free entry

Though there is an entrance fee to visit the nearby Ahar Museum, visiting Ahar Cenotaphs is free of cost.
