Housed in an 1892 Victorian mansion in the beach community of Santa Monica, The Birdcage, which opened in 2016, shares the house with a few other bars, but only The Birdcage gets the top floor, that features a very spacious living room, two bars, and a splendid outdoor patio. With intriguing names like Chocolate Soldier and Smuggler’s Eye Opener, Birds & Bees is a cocktail bar worth checking out. The drinks aren’t the only draw. Birds & Bees, with its 1950s-swank attitude, is actually located in the industrial ruins of what was once a Los Angeles Police Department gym. Enter Birds & Bees through a bright yellow door that leads to an underground space that is decorated in mid-century furnishings with a wonderful sunken living room!

If Westbound can pay homage to train travel then Now Boarding can display its love for the glamorous days of airline travel. Many may not remember, but there was a time when flying in an airplane was a pleasant experience. Now Boarding’s goal is to revive that adventure by offering exquisite cocktails in a splashy and classy aviation-themed bar surrounded by the mid-century-modern decor, live music and drink specials that play on the airline theme, such as the Wheels Up whiskey cocktail. Located in the Downtown LA Arts District, Resident provides a very hip, modish-type space with a large outdoor beer garden. A great spot on a warm evening to sip a hand-craft cocktail like a Buck Rogers or one of Resident’s draft cocktails like the Flannel Shirt, made with Famous Grouse scotch, Braulio Amaro, apple cider and lemon juice. Resident’s location is a multi-use space that experiences plenty of DJ action and live music. The outdoor area also has a food truck and fire-pit seating, creating a very fun and festive atmosphere.
