A satellite city to Chandigarh, Ajitgarh may not ring a bell until we tell you that this is the official name of Mohali. While this city in [Punjab] may not enjoy as much popularity as its neighbour Chandigarh, Mohali is rapidly developing as an IT hub. With multinational companies, such as Philips, Dell, and Quark calling it their home, Mohali sees quite a bit of business as well as leisure travellers. If you’re in the city and have some time to spare, we recommend you visit Baba Banda Singh Bahadur War Memorial, located about 15 km (9.3 mi) away from Chandigarh, in the nearby Chappar Chiri village. The site of this memorial is where a battle between the Sikh and Mughal armies was fought in 1710, and the former army emerged victorious. Playing a key role in this battle was Banda Singh Bahadur, an eminent Sikh warrior who not only led his army to a win, but also helped establish Sikh rule from Lahore to Delhi. This guide to Baba Banda Singh Bahadur War Memorial, Mohali will tell you just why this place is worthy of your time.

Stroll through the complex

The memorial is an aesthetically landscaped complex, lavished with paved walkways, artificial lakes, manicured foliage, and artful statues. You can walk through the entire place and soak in the beauty. Chairs have been placed for public convenience so you can make use of those and enjoy basking in the Punjabi airs and sun, with lovely views.

Marvel at the memorial's main attraction

Fateh Burj (Victory Tower), soaring at a height of about 100 m (328 ft), is the memorial’s star attraction. It is touted to be the tallest memorial in India, soaring higher than the famous Outub Minar as well! Fateh Burj is probably the first thing that will catch your eye after entering the memorial complex. Go a tad closer and you can admire the tower’s details. The tower has been built in an octagonal shape and is dotted with triangular openings that are meant to symbolize openings to position guns and other weapons. Crowning the top of this tower are a khanda (double-edged sword) – emblematic of Sikh valour – and a kalash (sacred water vessel) each. While the imposing tower is a glorious sight at daytime, it takes on a magnificent appeal at dusk, illuminated with strategically placed lights.

Hang out at the amphitheatre

There’s also an open-air amphitheatre at the memorial complex, overlooking Fateh Burj. The amphitheatre, boasting a seating capacity for up to 1,200 people, was designed with a purpose to host interesting light-and-sound shows, throwing light on Sikh history. However, no such shows have taken place in recent years. Instead, the amphitheatre is a popular spot for visitors to hang out and admire the tower now.

Admire the statues

All the mounds at the complex are topped with a life-size statue each of Banda Singh Bahadur himself along with his five generals – Bhai Fateh Singh, Bhai Maali Singh, Bhai Baaj Singh, Bhai Aali Singh, and Bhai Ram Singh. Informative placards are placed near all statues, detailing the history behind each of these figures, which are an excellent insight into history.
