In an industrial city, such as Bangalore (Bengaluru), it is hard to find many green spaces away from the pollution, shopping malls, and speeding cars. However, sometimes it is in the heart of these high-tech cities where you will find the most glorious nature-rich areas. Cubbon Park is one of the few places that will allow you to escape the hustle and bustle, to relish in the relaxing, calming, and green scenery that is abundantly present here. Let’s take a stroll through this lush park together, and explore some of the impressive views and aesthetic buildings that you will see during your visit.

Perfect for early morning activities

Cubbon Park, officially known as Sri Chamarajendra Park in memory of Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar, a 19th century Maharaja (King) of Mysore, is accessible from many roads, making it incredibly easy to find: M.G Road (Mahatma Gandhi Road), Hudson Circle, Kasturba Road, and Ambedkar Veedhi Road. You will be pleased to know that only light motor vehicles are allowed on some of the roads running through the park, however, it is rare that you will see them. If you fancy a morning walk, from 5am until 8am the park is entirely closed to any vehicle activity, allowing you to enjoy more fresh air as you exercise or choose to do morning yoga. This exquisite green space has been here since 1870 and expands across 300 acres (121 hectares) of land.

Expansive grassy areas, thick bamboo forests, and more

There are many areas to explore here, and you will notice many natural rock formations, dense thickets of trees, a forest of bamboos, and expansive grassy areas and flowerbeds. Among these, you’ll also stumble upon the renowned Silver Oak Tree. What is so special about the Silver Oak is that it was among the first oaks imported from Australia and introduced to Bangalore. There are also many monuments installed in the park, such as statues of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, Major General Sir Mark Cubbon, Rajya Dhurandhar, Sir K. Sheshadri Iyer, and the famous Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar himself.

There's so much more to explore

The High Court of Karnataka, also found here, is a vibrant red brick building, known as Attara Kacheri – meaning 18 offices, and still functions today. Construction began in 1864 centered around the Graeco-Roman style of architecture and was intended to be used by the three judges that made up the Chief Court of Mysore, and designated as the highest court of appeals in the State of Mysore (the former name of the state of Karnataka). You’ll also find that the State Archeological Museum, established in 1886, is also located within the grounds of Cubbon Park, and features an array of old coins, arrowheads, and a beautiful collection of the ancient pottery of Mohenjo-daro, known as the ‘mound of the dead’. Mohenjo-daro was a significant city settlement located in the Indus Valley, a prehistoric city in Pakistan built around 2600 BC.

A great place for a family outing

There is so much more to see and do here, making it a perfect place to bring your loved one, family, and friends. Cubbon Park is free to enter, and visiting hours are from 5am until 6pm. The park is open during public holidays, however it is closed on Mondays. If you are travelling with children, they will love the small amusement park, known as Jawahar Bal Bhavan, which is open from 10am until 5pm, and closed on Thursdays. Please be aware that only families can enter this area. If you are making the trip with your loved one, or a group of friends, you should opt to bring a blanket and snacks to indulge in a lovely picnic under one of the large shaded trees. You will also see others doing the same, as well as participating in yoga, or meditating throughout the area. Near the four entrances you will be able to purchase bottles of water, juice, or treat yourself to an ice-cream cone. There are public restrooms located here as well, but there is a small surcharge of about 10 INR (0.15 USD) that you’ll have to pay in order to use them.
