Tuscany is known for its delicious food and some of the best wines in the world; however, pizza is definitely not one of the region’s specialties—that honor belongs to Naples. But, there are three pizzerias in Florence that are definitely worth the visit if you’re craving doughy, cheesy deliciousness. And these joints incorporate the best of Tuscan produce into their handcrafted pizzas to produce truly unique pizza pies. Don’t forget to swing by these great pizza places when roaming the streets of Florence.

1. Berbere

Berbere pizza

Located in the cool Oltrano neighborhood of Florence, home to small shops run by craftspeople, Berbere fits right in with its artisanal pizzas made from healthy sourdough and organic ingredients. Examples of what you might find on the menu this summer are pizzas topped with roasted zucchini, feta, onion, and marjoram; buffalo mozzarella with tomato and basil; speck, gorgonzola, and roasted potatoes—and that is just their summer menu. In the late fall, I tasted two pizzas: one topped with roast pumpkin and mushrooms and the other with mozzarella, gorgonzola, walnuts, honey, and salumi. Both were mouthwateringly delicious and made me want to return in each season to taste new flavor combinations.

Visiting Berbere is a memorable experience in itself, as the exposed brick walls are covered with bright pops of graffiti art and the frequently changing menu consists of in-season produce, allowing you to get a sense of what is trendy and in-season in Italy. The atmosphere at Berbere is relaxed and to go with your pizza, they serve artisanal beers. Another thing that remains unmatched is its location on Piazza De’ Nerli. So from your seat, you can people-watch men and women going to and coming from work or the shops.

2. Sud – La Pizzeria in Mercato Centrale

Mercato Centrale

If you love food, then I have to suggest you visit Mercato Centrale during any visit to Florence. And though there are so many fabulous dining and drinking options on the second floor of the marketplace, my go-to is always Sud – La Pizzeria. This tasty spot is packed no matter what time of day you arrive, but the line moves quickly and the wood-fire pizzas cook fast.

Grab a simple fresh mozzarella and basil pizza that is served simply on a wooden platter to share with friends or eat all on your own. From the other food stalls at Mercato Centrale, you can also find wine, beer, desserts, pastas, Sicilian dishes, and more. Another great thing about dining at Mercato Centrale is that it’s kid-friendly, and you can dine outside of the typical Italian meal times since the restaurant is open all day.

3. SimBIOsi

Molo5

Located not too far from the Santa Maria Novella train station in Florence, SimBIOsi offers hungry eaters artisanal pizzas that incorporate only organic ingredients. Dig into the spicy tomato burrata, and nduja salami pie or opt for the healthy “Verdure” pizza, consisting of tomato, mozzarella, broccoli, chicory, and mushrooms. The craft beers on the menu are perfect to wash down the flavorful pizza.

During late spring, summer, and early fall, SimBIOsi also serves a smaller selection of their large pizza menu at Molo5. Molo5 is a summertime food market right along the northeastern side of the Arno River with several vendors, a fun atmosphere, and a large bar.

Good pizza outside of Naples

Flavorful pizza can be enjoyed outside of Naples - you just need to know where to look. Florence offers pizza lovers these three unique options to satiate their taste buds, and these highlighted restaurants situate you near sightseeing opportunities as well.
