Built between 1524 and 1562, this cathedral-fortress was constructed mainly for praying and from protection against Berber pirate attacks. Take a day to enjoy admiring the Gothic and Renaissance-style building of this cathedral. Flowers and shrubs can be found blooming outside the south gate of this impressive cathedral. This building dates back to the Muslim period. It is located at the foot of the Gibralfaro hill and is a fortress called the Alcazaba castle. In Arabic, the name means ‘citadel’. You can take a trip back in time through the castle’s remains which archaeologists say was built between 1057 and 1063. Though this building has been restored several times, remains of the Roman walls lined with red concrete can still be seen. You can also see the dungeon where Christian slave girls were locked up after a day’s work.

4. Relax in the Nicolás Salmerón Park

This park sits on a whopping 2.3 km (1.4 miles) area and is divided into two parts. The western side is called Parque Viejo while the eastern side is called Parque Nuevo. Filled with centennial trees, fountains, and pool, this park is an exciting place to visit. It also houses the remarkable Fountain of Fishes which marks the divider between the two areas. Parque Viejo dates as far back as the 18th century while Parque Nuevo was added to the Nicholas Salmeron Park in the 1970s. The park is named after Salmeron who was one of the first presidents of the First Republic of Almeria.

Today, at over 4.5 km (2.8 miles) long, these shelters stand as the most important and well-preserved underground shelters in all of Europe. The exciting and extensive tunnels are now one of the main attractions of the city. Visitors here get treated to a tour of the tunnels with a well-informed tour guide giving both Spanish and English commentaries.
