The official name of Belgaum is Belagavi and it was previously known as the “Bamboo Village” or “Venugrama” and is a city in the state of Karnataka, India. It is also the administrative headquarters of the Belgaum district in the huge Belgaum division. The Karnataka Government has also given a proposal of making the city the state’s second capital. It is for that reason another administrative building was constructed in the city. It was called Suvarna Vidhana Soudha and was eventually inaugurated in 2012. Below are some great things to do and see while visiting the city of Belgaum.

1. Bhatwada Waterfall Trek

This trek is immensely popular with the adventure freaks. The Bhatwada Waterfall Trek should be undertaken during the months of June to September. The visitors start their guided trip from Belgaum at around 7 am in the morning. You will then be taken to Kankumbi, the camping site. You will have your breakfast there and proceed towards Kalmani, which is the trek’s starting point. The trek is about 6 to 8 km (3-5 mi) long and takes around 4 hours to complete. On your journey, you will pass through some dense forests. There is also a gigantic boulder on your way that is referred to as the Mother Mary rock. The boulder has Mother Mary’s image inscribed on it. As you continue with this exciting trek, you will also come across a Shiva temple. When you eventually reach your destination at the Batwada temple, enjoy the cold water, which will shower on you.

This camp is located only about 20 km (12.4 mi) from Belgaum on a hillock. Some of the activities that you can do here are:

• Bird watching and treks

• Nature/wildlife documentary screenings

• Nature trails

• Mountain biking

The camp is situated near the famous Western Ghats at Khanapur. You can also reach here from Goa, Hubli, and Kolhapur in about two hours. The adventure camp got its name from the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary that is famous for the rare Free-tailed Bat of Wroughton. While living in this adventure camp, do not miss an opportunity to also explore the beautiful Western Ghats. There is a water stream and a forest nearby that you can also visit from your camp. You can do bird watching while you are there and be mesmerized with some beautiful species such as the rare Malabar Trogen, Emerald Cove, Imperial Pigeon, Malabar Grey Hornbill and Nuthatch.

3. Vajra Waterfall Trek

This trek will take you six hours to complete. You will start your trip from Belgaum early in the morning and will be taken to the campsite of Kankumbi, where you will have your breakfast for the day. After driving for approximately one hour, you will reach Chapoli, the beginning of the trek. You need to follow a steep terrain until you reach the confluence point of Mahadaye River and the Kasara stream. Enjoy a scintillating experience as you pass through a rocky terrain and enjoy exciting activities like crossing the river, viewing the scenic and evergreen Jamboti Range Forest and boulder hopping. Relish a delicious picnic lunch where the gushing water will give you company.

4. Kalsa Waterfall Trek


This overnight guided trek lies in a virgin valley in the borders of Goa and Karnataka. It runs on the rocky terrain of the Kalsa stream. As you trail down the Sural Valley, you will be camping in the forests of Kankumbi and enjoying the lush green landscape around you on your way to both Kalsa as well as Vajra Falls. Though the treks are moderate in terms of the difficulty level, the journey can be tedious as you will need to travel for about to 4 to 6 hours to complete it. As you proceed through the trail, you will have to climb the boulders before crossing River Kalsa and ultimately reach your destination. Then you can relax in the tents that have been set up in the wilderness.

5. Visit Military Vinayak, Durga Devi Mandir and Military Mahadev


Both Military Mahadev and Military Durga Devi Temples are maintained by the army stationed in Belgaum. The army guards regulate the constant stream of heavy traffic in the locality as visitors come in large numbers to visit the shrines. You can easily notice a painted sign on the narrow entrance’s wall that is captioned, “Military Durga Devi Temple.” This temple along with the Military Mahadev and Military Ganapati lie on the Bangalore-Pune National Highway, thus making an unusual and beautiful trio of temples in Belgaum.

6. Enjoy a magnificent sunset near Argan Lake

The Argan Ponds or the Argan Lake is located in close proximity to the Military Hindlaga Temple. This is a set of five ponds and there is a tiny bird sanctuary nestled into it with interesting species of birds that breed here. Previously, the lake was referred by the British officers as Airgun Talav. This was because the officers used to hunt rabbits and birds near this lake on weekdays.

7. Enjoy Shimbola Trek


This trek was quite recently discovered near the Shimbola Waterfall and is situated in the center of the Western Ghat. The Shimbola stream offers a trekking trail, taking about five hours to complete. You need to start your day early in Belgaum and then reach Kankumbi, which is the campsite. You can have your breakfast there in the morning. After that, you will be driven through a small village known as Maan. Thereafter, you will begin your guided tour to reach the Shimbola Waterfall. After trekking is complete, you will return to the village once more and have a relaxed lunch.

8. Sada Falls Trek
