The Civil War ended the program and the remaining camels were set free, but Hi Jolly remained in Arizona. He lived well into his seventies, and upon his death, the locals were so fond of him, they spent several weeks building him a tomb out of petrified wood and quartz. In 1936, a bronze camel was placed on top and a plaque with his history was added to the side. The camels, however, outlived both Jolly and Davis, with the last sighting of the wild creatures being in 1942.
