Mount Bromo, an active volcano in the eastern Indonesia’s island of Java, is a place with breathtaking natural beauty. The volcano has become a magnet that attracts hundreds of thousands domestic and international visitors to witness the magnificent sunrise view from the volcano’s crater area.

This makes hotel businesses around Mount Bromo flourish. Like many other tourist spots, there are many hotels of different prices that offer different facilities and services. Bromo Cottages is one of them.

Bromo Cottages atop a hill

Bromo Cottages was established in 1991 and it was built on top of Losari hill in the Pasuruan county. On your way up to the hotel, you will easily notice the hotel buildings, as this is the biggest modern building atop the hill area.

Unique lift, unique experience

The hotel is a hilly complex of more than 100 cottages (some are on higher grounds than the other). You’d certainly need to have very good physical strength to hike to your cottage after the long hike to Bromo’s crater. But fret’ not if you do not feel up to the task.

This hotel is thoughtful, and you can easily navigate through the complex (e.g. from one cottage to another or from your cottage to the receptionist area at the hilltop) by using the glass funicular lift. This 116-meter long outdoor lift is very unique! Designed with a rail similar to that of the train, you will see the entire beauty of the hotel area through the lift’s glass walls. You will have the view of all the cottages, the gardens and the greenery surrounding the hotel. Traveling up and around the hotel area is just one button away!

Rooms and facilities

The room’s rate in Bromo Cottages ranges from 1,350,000 IDR (94.76 USD) to 2,350,000 IDR (164.95 USD) per night with breakfast for two (most of the time they give fried rice with coffee and tea). If you are coming with group of 4 to 8 people, you can rent a cottage for greater privacy. The amenities include a safe deposit box, television, private bathroom, etc. If you stay the night here, there is one special service that you may request. That is the wakeup call at 3 AM, made personally by the staff, to make sure that you won’t be late to go to the viewing point for the sunrise view.

Cold and foggy in the morning

The weather in Bromo in the morning can reach as low as 5 degree Celsius. Waking up early in such cool climate can be difficult, especially when you stay up late at night. Note that fog in the morning, usually around 5am to 6am, is pretty normal. Dress warmly to avoid catching a cold.

Dahlia Restaurant at Bromo Cottages

The hotel has a restaurant named Dahlia (located at the same building where the reception is). The restaurant serves Chinese and Western dishes like Capjay (local term of mixed Chinese vegetables) as well as beef steak and mashed potato, but if you want a large bowl of hot soup, order the Indonesian dish called soto. It is chicken soup with yellowish herb called kunir (a herb that is good for your stamina), which usually comes with rice. In such a cold weather, what can be better than eating soto and drinking hot coffee or tea?

The best hotel in the area

There are other hotels in the Bromo area, but Bromo Cottages is one of the hotels with the most beautiful outdoor view. It is also the only accommodation with an outdoor lift. So if you want to experience all of these, be sure to have your stay at Bromo Cottages.
