North Shore is the surf beach of every surfer’s dream destination. It is thrilling and exciting, especially during the winter time when the winter swell produces the waves that reach as high as over 30 feet (9 meters). Apart from being the Hawaiian locals, and the world surfers must visit destination, there are many great beaches for any tourist to enjoy, and experience the feel of surf and beach culture in Hawaii.

Haleiwa is located on the North Shore, in the northern part of Oahu Island. As the name suggests, shores on the north of Oahu have incredible beaches that the world surfers die for. The water is crystal clear with white sand and incredibly large waves, especially during the winter swell.

If you are traveling from other parts of Oahu, you are most likely going to be greeted by the sign in the picture, which is one of the most well known signs in Oahu. This is a popular local, and tourist picture spot, welcoming visitors to the North Shore, the surfers’ paradise. If you go to the North Shore, the most important thing you have to do is to visit the beaches! Of course, many tourists like to stop by and try the shrimp trucks, and get the famous shaved ice, which is indeed famous in the North Shore, but you must check out the beaches. Of course, during winter, the waves get too big and too dangerous for casual swimmers and surfers, but it is still so relaxing and fascinating to watch the waves crush.It’s also great to watch how professional and local surfers ride the waves. If you are a beginner surfer though, during the summer, waves are not that large in the North Shore, so you still can enjoy surfing in the world mecca of surfing.

The beaches of the North Shore stretch over 7 miles, which is over 11 kilometers, and are really the perfect beaches to catch the perfect waves. From Waimea Bay, Ehukai Beach, to Sunset Beach, you see many people on the beach all year round, particularly during the winter when fearless surfers are catching the most incredible waves that you can imagine. As well as the surfers, you see many photographers with big cameras ready to take the best shots of surfers catching those big waves. In addition, there are families, children, and dogs running on the beaches having their own beach time. Whatever you decide to do, you will find a great moment to spend on the beach of the North Shore. Maybe you can bring your own camera, or smart phone, and take the perfect beach shot you are searching for.

Starting from the end of November to early December, the winter swell brings gigantic waves to the North Shore, which can reach as high as over 30 feet, which is over 9 meters. During the massive winter swell, only experienced professional surfers, or locals, can catch these waves, so you want to make sure to check the signs before going in the water. This is the time when all the world’s best professional surfers come to Hawaii, doing competitions in Maui and in the North Shore, so even you do not surf, you will for sure be entertained and thrilled by the fearless surfers catching those monstrous waves.

At Ehukai Beach, also known as Pipeline, Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, a professional surfing competition takes place in November or December annually. During the competition, you see everyone on the beach, eager to witness how professionals ride the enormous waves with ease. It is, indeed, such a liberating feeling to see these surfers doing what they are best at. It is especially an exciting time of the year in the North Shore, so make sure to check when the competition takes place, and if you are visiting at that time of the year, definitely take a day trip to the North Shore!

Many of the tourists are staying in the Waikiki area, so if you go to the North Shore, you are most likely to be taking a day trip to the beaches of the North Shore. If you have time, make sure to stay and see the beautiful sunset. Of course, you can see the sunset anywhere in Oahu, and it is beautiful regardless of the place, but the harmony of a white sand beach, the unrealistically large waves during winter, and the burning red sun creates a magical moment during the time of the sunset. It is definitely worth waiting for after a long day of beach adventures in the North Shore.

A day trip adventure in North Shore

Depending on what kind of activity you are looking for on your vacation, you might would like to stay near Waikiki and be comfortable, but if you have time, definitely take a day trip to the North Shore. The beaches there are incredibly beautiful, and the power of nature, which you can see during the winter swell, is simply breathtaking. In this article, I focused on mostly outdoor activities, but there are cute boutiques and stores for those who enjoy that aspect of tourism too, so even you are not a big beach person, you will enjoy visiting the North Shore for these aspects as well. Traveling from Waikiki to the North Shore, you get to see the changes in geography, and it is very different from Waikiki. Just know, however, the waves do get pretty big, so pay attention to the signs and lifeguards, and you will have a blast!
