Located right in the heart of Kaunas, Lithuania’s historic old town, the Daugirdas Old City Hotel is perhaps the best location for guests visiting Kaunas for a short stay. The hotel is located about a 2-minute walk from the Kaunas Rotuse (town hall) and the surrounding square, which boasts some of the best historic architecture of the city. Guests will easily be able to explore all of the old town and other important sights within 24 hours, especially when located in such a prime part of the city.
Large rooms
The rooms at Daugirdas Old City Hotel are relatively large compared with other European hotels, making this a good option if you are traveling with a child. Despite the outdated furnishings, the room was comfortable and the large window provides ample light. The rooms at the Daugirdas Old City Hotel are outfitted with a desk and chair, mini fridge, large bureau, small TV, and reading lamps. The bathroom in the room I stayed in had a large mirror, bathtub with shower attachment, towels, and free toiletries. Do note the rooms are not super soundproof, so if you are planning to visit during one of Kaunas’ many outdoor festivals, you might want to bring earplugs.
Free Wi-Fi is also available in the rooms and was relatively fast during my stay, making this an appropriate hotel for short business trips.
Rooftop bar and other amenities
The rooftop bar at the Daugirdas Old City Hotel was a lovely, unexpected amenity that provides nice views of Kaunas. The rooftop bar has an indoor and outdoor section — perfect for Lithuania’s frequently chilly and rainy weather. It is a really nice place to enjoy a drink in the evening or even relax with a coffee and your computer before starting the day.
The Daugirdas Old City Hotel also has an on-site restaurant, hipster-looking barbershop, and comfortable lounge in the lobby.
Tasty breakfast
A complimentary buffet breakfast is provided to guests at the Daugirdas Old City Hotel in their interesting basement dining area. The buffet had a surprisingly large variety of breakfast items including cold cut meats and cheeses, breads, pastries, cereals, and yogurt. Hot breakfast items are also available such as crepes, potatoes, bacon, and eggs. There is also a coffee machine and a variety of juices provided for guests.
Great location
The location, however, is what makes the Daugirdas Old City Hotel a great option for a short stay as it puts you in the perfect location to explore the city. Kaunas is a pretty walkable city (and taxis are inexpensive if needed) — the old town and its stunning architecture can be easily explored in less than half a day. The Kaunas Castle and the lovely tree-lined walking street, Laisves al., is easy to reach. In addition, beautiful street art can be found when you explore hidden alleyways.
The Daugirdas Old Town Hotel also provides free parking if needed, allowing guests to come with a car. If arriving by car, do plan on visiting the nearby 9th Fort, which is a very impressive, startling historical sight only about 10–15 minutes (by car) away from the hotel.
