By and large, Minshuku 500 Mile Lodge’s cozy personality is thanks to one person – the lodge’s “momma”. She’s so approachable and sweet I felt like I had known her for a long time, even though we’d just met!
I’ve been going to this hotel for five years, and I really feel like she’s a close relative of mine. She’s very knowledgeable about a lot of things: the ocean, Hokkaido, growing vegetables, fishermen, and more. Talking to her is really fun!
Stare at the Vast Ocean Through Your Room Window!
There are two stories and a total of eight tatami (traditional Japanese bamboo mat floor) rooms at the hotel. Rooms are available for two to eight people, and every room has a window with a magnificent ocean view.
The ocean is right outside, stretching as far as the eye can see, and the sound of the waves crashing on the beach can be heard all day long. Enjoy the luxury of slipping in and out of a nap while listening to the sound of the ocean.
Natural Hot Spring Water, Straight from the Ground
The hot spring water used in the baths is clear and contains hydrogen sulfide, giving it a distinct smell. And of course, it’s 100% natural! It’s said to have a positive effect on chronic rheumatoid arthritis, neuritis, chronic skin diseases, diabetes, nerve pain, and more.

Gaze at the Ocean from the Outdoor Bath
The view of the ocean from the rooms is great, but from the outdoor bath it’s even better. It’s so close that waves have even come all the way into the bath during typhoons.
It feels great to have a relaxing soak and gaze out at the sometimes gentle, sometimes stormy sea!
A Family Venture — Meet Momma's Son, the Chef
Until last year, the husband was cooking food for the hotel, but this year his son has taken over. The chef may have changed, but the deliciousness and huge portion sizes haven’t! There are two course options, seven item or nine item, but you should prepare yourself for a challenge no matter which one you pick.
The seven course meal comes with half a crab (in this case, kegani, or hairy crab), and the nine course meal comes with a whole one. (Note: if fishermen weren’t able to catch crab that day, this menu item won’t be available.) So much food it almost hurts! A happy pain of course. Other menu items include the famous Kojohama tarako, or cod eggs, and squid shabu-shabu, the 500 Mile Lodge specialty. Kick back and relax as you enjoy these gifts from the sea, all in the comfort of your room.
