Located in Karnataka, UNESCO World Heritage Site Hampi once served as the seat of power of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century. Said to be one of the biggest cities in the medieval era, it also was one of, if not the richest cities in India at the height of its prosperity. However, most of the city was razed during the Mughal attack, and the Elephant Stables, which housed the royal elephants, was one of the few buildings that were not completely destroyed. Although it has seen some damage over the past years, it still retains most of its original structure, thanks largely to the efforts of the Archaeological Survey of India, which is seeing to the preservation of the 15th-century building. You would be hard-pressed to imagine that the structure was used to house these animals, magnificent they may be, given the intricacy of the design, as well as the architecture of the building itself. If you want to explore the chambers of this awe-inspiring structure, be sure to use this guide to Elephant Stables, Hampi, so you will know what to see and do in the area.

Elephant's stables

The highlight of the Elephant Stables is, without a doubt, the stables themselves. This building served as the home of the ceremonial elephants used by the royalty of the Vijayanagara Empire. Save for a little bit of wear and tear, the building stands as it did back in the medieval era. It features 11 domed chambers. While 10 of these resemble Islamic architecture, the central dome recalls the design of the temples of Hampi. The contrasting designs were said to have been deliberately done to show the inclusiveness of cultures and religions. Some theorize that the central dome is used as a place for gatherings and celebrations, while others say it is where the musicians are put up during special events. Regardless of its purpose, you can easily see that it has more intricate decor compared to the others. Each chamber is spacious enough to house two elephants at a time. The domes of each chamber come in different shapes, almost in contrast to the symmetrical appearance of the building. While you’re here, be sure to look up to see the iron hooks installed on the ceilings, which is where the chains that were used to tie the elephants to the building were suspended. Keep an eye out for the hidden staircase as well so you can access the roof of the building.

Fun fact: the elephants that used to be housed in these stables were considered the best in the kingdom.

Light and sound show

If you have the time, wait in the building at 7pm so you can witness the free light and sound show. This activity is held at the same time every day, weather permitting.
