If you knew where the pot of gold was at the end of the rainbow, would you tell anyone? Most would say “no” but I am not most and I would like to share my good fortunate with you, and this is exactly why I’m going to tell you about the priceless experience that you could have at the unusual, quirky, surprising and quite frankly fabulous Glacis Beisl in Vienna, Austria. My travel companion is somewhat a magician in the kitchen but even he was impressed with our dining experience at Glacis Beisl which is located at Breite G. 4, 1070, Austria. It is open daily from 11.00 am – 11.00 pm with the kitchen opening from 12.00 pm onwards. You can’t go wrong with this place and I’m ecstatic to be able to share my insight with you.

Lunch between museums

The location of this eatery is central yet subtly hidden, which makes it more of an adventure when you’re trying to find it and do subsequently locate it. It is between the National Theater, Spittelberg, Mariahilferstrasse and the Museumsquartier. It is roughly a 4 minute walk from the Volkstheater metro station but if you are in the Museumsquartier, it is just around the corner and is hidden on a side street. If you’re looking for lunch between museums, it has to be at the top of your list. Learn about Austria at its Natural History Museum or the Leopold Museum and then take a break at Glacis Beisl before heading to the Kunsthistorisches Museum. In order to access the restaurant, you need to walk down a steep concrete stairway below street level which will lead you inside the restaurant.

As you walk down the stairway, you will see graffiti on the adjoining walls and it may even look a little bit like you are descending into a subway (but fear not, you are not). Once you arrive inside the restaurant, you will immediately see a courtyard and will be taken back with how this quaint and quiet garden sits so firmly in such a prime location and is yet hidden (albeit popular) at the same time. If you are visiting at lunch time, you are likely to be able to obtain a table in the various seating areas (described below). However, if you plan on enjoying this oasis in the evening, you are advised to make a dinner reservation in advance.

A secret garden suitable for any occasion

When you enter the courtyard, it will first look like you are in a secret garden. However, you will then notice the tables set out underneath the trees and vines, all surrounded by plants and flowers. It really is a beautiful outdoor space with amazing lighting. There is also an indoor conservatory seating area as well as a more formal restaurant where you can dine, meaning that this eatery is suitable for any weather conditions. During my visit, my travel companion and I had to sit in the beautiful garden where we felt the light and cool breeze pass by.

There is a lot to like about this place and I have to recommend that you visit it during your time in Vienna, whether for work or for pleasure. I say this because it is a hot spot for people that want to either do some reading or work on their laptops. There really is a mix of people at this site; you will see individuals on their own, couples, groups of friends, families and people will be stylishly and casually dressed — there is no criteria in respect to attire. It is the type of place that is suitable for any occasion; although, I must add that it seemed to be the locals that were embracing this spot the most, as there were very few tourists (which is why it’s important I tell you about it!).

During the different seasons, the style of the courtyard is changed and adapted, much to the pleasure of its local clientele as they can experience something new and different in their favourite place. For example, at Christmas time, it is all decked out with lights, stalls and is very eye-catching indeed.

Classic authentic and hearty dishes with a modern twist

The type of cuisine offered at Glacis Beisl is that of classic Viennese dishes with a modern twist. There are a number of options on the menu, so one really would have to dine here many times to appreciate what they have to offer. The menu had standard Viennese dishes as well as more adventurous options for those who have a palate for fancier dishes. If you’re looking for savoury or sweet, your expectations will be exceeded with what can be created out of Glacis Beisl’s kitchen. The quality of everything is excellent and there are even some vegetarian dishes that are traditional whilst others are more innovative.

If you’re looking for value for money, then you should consider visiting at lunch-time and opting for the lunch menu which will include the a main meal with a side salad or a main meal with a dessert. The cost for such a meal for one is around 12 EUR (14 USD). The food is excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed my penne pasta with a tomato sauce and gratings of parmesan cheese, which was accompanied by a leafy, well seasoned and dressed salad. As you can see, the portions are generous and filling.

Highly addictive and a home for locals

Now that you know about the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, I must warn you that visiting it is highly addictive! If you visit Glacis Beisl once, you will definitely want to return again before the end of your visit. It is like a home for locals that offers real Viennese specialities and is well worth a visit, even if on your own (as you won’t feel out of place). In respect to seating, I would recommend that you sit in the courtyard rather than the conservatory or formal dining room as it’s really snug and cosy and as such is a wonderful place for a hot summer day or warm evening. Take my advice, you won’t regret checking this unusual yet somewhat traditional place out!
