Jaipur is a famous city in the province of Rajasthan, India, and it is known as the pink city. Hawa Mahal is a beautiful red and pink colored palace with a beehive-shaped wall that you would only think of in fairytales. Interested?
What is Hawa Mahal?
Hawa Mahal is a famous destination located in Jaipur, India, which is also very well known as the ‘Palace of Winds’ or the ‘Palace of the Breeze’. This name is due to the beautiful front wall of the palace that extends up to 50 feet (15 meters). This architectural gem of Jaipur is made of pink and red sandstone, and was built in 1799 during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh.
The palace built for the women of the royal household
When observing Hawa Mahal, many might wonder why such a beautiful structure was built just beside the streets. Hawa Mahal was deliberately built in that way because it was a palace where the Jaipur royal women could ‘people watch’. During those days, the Purdah system was quite dominant and the women never appeared in public or met strangers. Through the windows of the high wall and other windows throughout the palace, women had the freedom to watch the daily life on the streets and the many festivals that were going on without being seen in public.
Architecture of Hawa Mahal
Hawa Mahal possesses a very interesting architectural style since it is a fusion of the Islamic Mughal architecture and the Hindu Rajput architecture. This five-story palace was designed by the architecture Lal Chand Ustad. There is so much that can be appreciated in the architecture of this palace, including its arches, floral patterns, domed canopies, etc. The front wall of Hawa Mahal itself is said to be the Maharaja’s way of showing his faithfulness to the Hindu God Krishna, because it depicts the shape of his crown. The floors of Hawal Mahal are not connected with stairs, but instead they are connected by slopes in the small corridors. If you are claustrophobic, it would be best to keep in mind that the corridors are quite narrow and small.
How to get to Hawa Mahal
Getting to Hawa Mahal is quite easy, since it is a very popular destination in Jaipur. From your hotel, you can easily take a taxi or tuk-tuk (auto-rickshaw) to Hawa Mahal. Note that there is an entrance fee of 50 INR (approximately 0.70 USD). The opening hours of this site are from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm, but an hour or two is enough time to spend at Hawa Mahal. For visitors who want a guide, there are audio guides and human guides for a certain fee. A small museum is also available at the site and opens from Saturday to Thursday.
Admire the beauty of Hawa Mahal
Hawa Mahal is one of the most prominent beauties of Jaipur, and it would be such a waste to skip it. For less than a dollar, travelers can get a deep insight regarding culture, history, and architecture, and not to mention taking a few shots of the great view of the city. If you are heading to Jaipur soon, be sure to write Hawa Mahal on your list so you get the opportunity to admire its beauty. Happy travels!
