Planning to visit Yogyakarta but having a hard time choosing the best hotel to stay in? I would like to recommend Royal Ambarrukmo. Conveniently located in the downtown area, this is the five-star hotel that features an irreplaceable historic value and amenities that cannot be found in other hotels in Yogyakarta.

This hotel belongs to the King!

Built as a palace in the 19th century by the king of the Islamic kingdom of Yogyakarta, Hamengkubuwana the sixth, this used to be the place where the Yogyakarta officials and the Dutch colonial government held meetings. It also functioned as a residence for the next king till he stepped down in 1931. In 1966, the palace was functioned as a hotel by Hamengkubuwana the ninth. Due to tear and wear over time, hotel was shut down in 2004. In 2010, it was renovated and the hotel that belongs to the royal family reopened in 2011, presenting itself as a five star hotel.

Royal rooms and services

So, this is the hotel that belongs to the royal family. What does this hotel offers to its guests? Just like other five-star hotels, the nine-floor hotel has hundreds of guest rooms equipped with better facilities and amenities like an in-room safe, fitness center, swimming pool, sauna, 24-hour room service, etc. However, each guest room has a lavish interior filled with ‘composed’ colors, dominated by neutral white and brown that somehow evokes a noble ambience. This is the design that you will find in the Javanese palace and houses. There is another surprise. If you stay in a suite room, a direct view to the active volcano, Mount Merapi, is waiting for you!

Breakfast buffet with great variety

Your accommodation will come with all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet for two at the Royal Restaurant. There are various choices of local and international cuisines to choose. For the appetizers, try the waffle (sweet baked batter served with brown syrup) and croissant. Both are crispy and the syrup that comes with the waffle tastes like honey. You may also try its Wonton soup (soup with dumplings stuffed with meat) as the meat is tender and soup is delicious, especially when you add green onion sprinkles into it. However, don’t eat too much, as you will have so many other food to eat!

There are abundant food choices starting from the Indonesian krengsengan (beef with chili sauce), Chinese roasted chicken with soy sauce, Japanese sushi to western menu like pizza. Don’t miss Yogya’s delicacy called Gudeg, a sweet flavored meal made of unripe jackfruit cooked with coconut milk and palm sugar, served with chicken, egg and rice. Also, don’t forget to grab a krupuk (prawn cracker) especially if you take Indonesian foods, as they taste better with it!

Multi-purpose ballrooms for different types of functions and events

As a prominent hotel in Yogyakarta, Royal Ambarrukmo also accommodates small business meetings and large conferences. It is not surprising that Royal Ambarrukmo is often used as a venue to hold international conferences, as it has various ballrooms of different sizes. These rooms are also used for wedding parties and events like a fashion show. Staffs are professional and they are ready to help you with your needs, hence one can rest assured that your functions or events will proceed smoothly.

Although located in the heart of the city, all rooms are facing the pool area, which is at the back of the hotel. Hence, the street noise is completely absent in your room. Tired of treeless and noisy downtown Yogyakarta? Go to the pool area of the hotel. With the greenery and tranquility, the pool area presents a totally different world and you will feel that you are somewhere else, far from the downtown!

Convenient location

convenient location

Royal Ambarukmo hotel, which takes only 15 minutes drive from the airport, is conveniently located near one of the biggest shopping malls in Yogyakarta, Abarukmo Plaza, which is adjacent to this hotel. All you need for modern entertainment and shopping are available here, as you will find game shops and Carrefour hypermarket inside. Fancy another kind of entertainment that is more traditional? Just visit Pendopo Ambarukmo, a Javanese house of an open hall with artistic wooden pillars. This was previously a part of the Royal Residence. Or, you can visit The Heritage Kedaton Ambarrukmo Museum, which used to be a residence of one of the Kings of Yogyakarta. Today, it is a museum that displays Indonesian cultural legacy such as Keris (antique Javanese sword), and Wayang (Javanese puppet). The Pendopo is just between the hotel and the plaza and the museum is right behind Pendopo.

Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel is worth the price

Rooms are offered at various rates: Ambarrukmo Suite (445 USD), Executive suite (254 USD), junior suite (142 USD), premiere (192 USD), and deluxe (121 USD). Besides the benefits mentioned above, all rates also include free access to enter The Heritage Kedaton Ambarrukmo Museum as well as free bicycle rental for touring the town during your entire stay! The facilities here are really worth the price, hence, making this hotel one of the most visited hotels in town.
