Yokohama is one of the most popular destinations for those who are looking for a mixture of experiences just outside of Tokyo. A lot of people consider Yokohama to be a romantic dating spot where you can see a beautiful night view of high-rise buildings and the coming together of Chinatown with the rest of the port town. Akarenga, Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, is located by the port of Yokohama, and is known for its fashionable, trendy red brick building with restaurants, bars, and stores for couples who are looking for a romantic one day get-away.

Discover the symbolic red brick building

Akarenga, which translates into red bricks in Japanese, is, as the word suggests, a building made of red bricks. There are two warehouses facing each other and a large space in between. Depending on the time of year, there are different seasonal events that take place in this space such as Oktoberfest in October, an ice skate rink during winter, and Christmas celebrations with a large Christmas tree at the center of the space during the festive season.

Explore the port city Yokohama

Right beside Akarenga is the Port of Yokohama. Yokohama was the first modern port city in Japan where goods and people traveled in and out of the country and beyond. In recent years, both international and Japanese tourists enjoy luxurious travel from Yokohama port on cruises such as the Princess Cruise. Thus, if you are traveling to or from Yokohama port, the restaurants, cafes, bars, and entertainment spots at Akarenga are a great place to stop by. A fantastic way to relax or spice up your travel, you may even be able to see some performing arts in the area.

Stretch your legs at the park!

Akarenga is right next to Yamashita Park, which is also known as a popular dating spot, where you can sit on a bench and just relax watching the waves roll by. Akarenga itself also has a space where you can sit on the grass, take the weight off your feet and have a picnic. This grass space is very popular on warm and sunny afternoons, as well as the weekends. If you are not so much of a fine diner, you can just bring your own food and have a picnic here surrounded by pretty flowers and rich green grass.

Fine dining at Akarenga

If you are relaxed after walking around Yamashita Park and/or well entertained by an event taking place in the open space of Akarenga, you can take a look inside for a place to eat. Sitting back and dining at fine restaurants at Akarenga can make for another romantic experience, however dining at Akarenga is not exactly cheap, so it might not be for you if you have a tight budget. Having said that, there is also a food court, though it is slightly more expensive than average. Yokohama can be a little expensive, especially around Akarenga, so you might like to bring little extra if you are bringing a special date.

A weekend getaway at Akarenga!

For those of you who are a little tired with constantly crowded Tokyo, taking a train to catch the fresh sea breeze at Akarenga would make a great day trip for your Japan itinerary. If you make your way to Akarenga, you can also visit nearby tourist attractions such as Yokohama ChinaTown, Cosmo World (amusement park), and the Ramen Museum. Enjoy Akarenga on a romantic date or simply on a relaxing weekend getaway.
