Add a little fairy-tale to your travels and visit the Venice of India, Udaipur. Situated in the state of Rajasthan, Udaipur is considered the most romantic city in India. Full of history, culture and picturesque scenes, surround yourself by beauty and maybe even a dash of romance.
Here are the best ways to experience Udaipur.
1. See the city from a bird’s eye view: the City Palace
The largest palace in Rajasthan, the City Palace is a labyrinth of corridors, arches and breathtaking views. Situated on Lake Pichola, the palace is made up of eleven smaller palaces and has converted a small area into a museum. To fully explore the palace, it will take roughly 2-3 hours depending how thorough you want to be. Entrance fees will cost 50 INR, approx. 0.74 USD with a further 100 INR if you want to take your camera inside, approx. 1.50 USD.
Inside you are directed around a one way system. Once at the top of the palace the views are simply magical! However, ‘no photo’ signs are occasionally scattered around. With guards also present, don’t risk trying to take a sneaky selfie with no camera permit.
Traveler's tips
You cannot miss visiting City Palace during your stay in Udaipur. For Indians, the entry fee is 300 INR (3.62 USD), and you can click as many pictures and videos as you want with your smartphone inside. Moreover, if you're a student, don't forget to carry your ID to avail of the student discount and pay an entry fee of only 100 INR (1.21 USD). Remember to collect a pink/yellow slip from the chief's office for the discounted prices. In addition, different packages, including boat rides and light shows, are also available at the ticket counter. For foreigners, ticket prices are different. Inside, there are restrooms and drinking water available, as well as a vending machine if you need quick snacks or drinks!
2. Splurge on some jewellery shopping
Udaipur’s streets are narrow and abundant with colour and handicrafts. Whether you want to enjoy delicately displayed pottery or dive in for a rummage of clothing, Udaipur is sure to have you loosening your wallet strings.
Hours can be spent browsing the Indian style jewellery and bartering for a good price. But why not get a piece customised?
Throughout the market streets, talented jewellers are sat outside the small shops ready to welcome you in. You can design your own piece or customise something already being sold, but there is no way you will leave empty handed.
3. Enjoy a puppet performance
The idea of a puppet show will have many feeling sceptical I am sure. Every evening at 7 pm the Bagore-Ki-Haveli host the ‘Bagore Dance Show’. Entrance fees are 100 INR, approx. 1.50 USD, with a further fee of 50 INR, approx. 0.70 USD to take your camera. You will be doused in entertainment, tradition and plenty of laughs.
Converted into museum, the Bagore-Ki-Haveli transforms into a stage of colour and performance. Starting with a brief introduction, you are graced with traditional Indian dancing, singing and a jaw dropping performance of a woman dancing with pots on her head while standing on broken glass.
The highlight of the night is the traditional Rajasthani puppet show. Although aimed at children, you will find the whole audience is filled with laughter, which creates a fantastic atmosphere. The talent of the puppet master is simply amazing and the storyline is truly endearing.

4. Sunset at Lake Pichola
End your day by watching the sunset over Lake Pichola. Admire the idyllic scenery and reflection of the amazing architecture by boat or sitting across the lake. I would recommend viewing from across the lake as you get a real sense of peace whilst enjoying the illuminated sky.
A sunset cruise will cost you 300 INR, approx. 4.50 USD. Departing from the City Palace jetty, (leaving every 20 minutes), you will be taken along the banks of Old Udaipur and back again. With truly stunning views, the sunset oozes romance and beauty. An ideal way for a couple to spend their evening.
Experience the beauty of Udaipur
Udaipur is truly a destination worth visiting. With its picturesque scenery, beautiful architecture and never ending streets, Udaipur feels incredibly magical. If these activities leave you wanting more, why not explore the streets viewing the intricate paintings on buildings or add a touch of traditional body art with some henna.
