“Rosa & Berry Tawada” in Maibara city, Shiga prefecture, is a touristic farm established by a housewife who had a gardening hobby. Usually touristic farms are associated with facilities for kids, but this one has a well-managed western style garden, a restaurant with specially arranged healthy menu and even a winery, so it is very attractive and enjoyable also for adult visitors!

Excitement for gardening fans! A splendid garden of 13 000 square meters!

The best spot in the farm is undoubtedly the spacious garden! The admission fee is 600 JPY, but they are worth it!

There are over 160 roses from 94 different types and many mountain and field plants around the 13 000 square meters of this splendid garden. Fans of gardening can only get excited when they see all the flowers grown everywhere around. There are name signs next to every plant so even people who don’t know much about botanical matters will learn about plants they’ve never heard before.

You can enjoy the well-arranged roses, or you can casually cross the little stream running through the garden by stepping over the stones and go to the next place. There is a natural pond with ducks in the middle, and in general this garden is very original and interesting. You’ll see visitors leisurely chatting on the benches and gazebos installed around!

Buffest style restaurant with a healthy menu!

“Daichi Restaurant” is a popular buffet style dining place inside the farm. The menu has been arranged by nutritionists with a care for one’s beauty and health. The big table in the middle of the restaurant offers mainly vegetable dishes prepared with seasonal ingredients which are good for the body.

There are dishes based on Chinese medicinal cooking, boiled vegetables and salads, pumpkin and sweet potato tempura and other dishes rich in colors and nutrition, therefore it is hard to pick what to eat. Of course, you can’t try everything on your first go, so you will visit the table again and again. Some dishes are served at specific hours and you will exclaim in admiration when they bring in yet another thing you’d like to try.

Every dish makes the best use of its ingredients’ taste. The restaurant is easy to use for everyone and families often come for lunch. There is also a terrace so many people eat outside on sunny days.

“Daichi Restaurant” is in the area where admission is free, so you only pay for eating. Café “Easy Time” offers originally made cakes in the small garden nearby. Perhaps a good place for your afternoon tea.

“Daichi Restaurant” Open: 11:00~ 15:00 (order until 14:30) “Easy Time” Lunch time: 11:00~ 15:00 (10:00~ 11:00 is tea time) Tea time: 14:30~ until closed Both are closed on Tuesdays

A rich array of craft experiences

The experience options are many too. You can pick blueberries, make beeswax candles, play with sheep or cook pizza or bread. In the summer season blueberry picking is recommended between the end of June and the beginning of September. There is a large field in the center of the farm where you can enjoy picking sharp blue, becky blue and other blueberry sorts.

You can also try wool felt craft which is popular among women. There are many different types of felts in the workshop, so you can simply pick your preferred color and create a strap key holder or a hair tie using the special felting needle. It takes some patience, but usually can be done in 20 minutes, so many young women passionately enjoy this craft while having a chat. Wool felt experience: Check the official website for the participation fee. Note: The workshop is located in the paid area.

A winery with New Zealand wine brands

And finally! In March 2014 “Osawa Wines” winery opened inside the farm! “Osawa Wines” offers good-quality delicious wines produced in New Zealand by Japanese. The winery is located in Maraekakaho, in the western part of Hawke’s Bay where Osawa developed local lands and grew grapevines.

In Japan Osawa Wines’ brands can be bought mainly online, but only in Rosa & Berry Tawada there is a shop for direct sales! Not only wines, but also popular New Zealand manuka honey and cosmetics can be bought there. Feel free to taste the products.

Inside this farm shop in the middle of the stylish garden and the blueberry field you feel as if you’ve arrived to a foreign winery. I strongly recommend visiting this place when you go to the farm!

Stylish and relaxing countryside

The main attracting point of Rosa & Berry Tawada are the well-arranged green gardens and fields, managed by the female owner. There are many little things inside the farm which make you feel relaxed and bring a sense of specialness to your daily life, like the flower arrangement or the healthy natural dishes. If you walk around, you’ll find more – like the climbing rose on the walls of the toilets, or the local jam which uses blueberries picked from the field. Many things you will want to replicate also in your own house. Therefore you instantly want to buy the flowers sold at the exit on the way home. Please visit Rosa & Berry Tawada farm and enjoy searching for ideas about how to change your own living place.
