The Korean Wave, or Hallyu, has conquered the world by storm in the recent decade due to the proliferation of Korean pop culture. The surging popularity of Korean pop culture has a positive impact on the country’s tourism figures, and that means demand for accommodation has also increased aggressively over time. If you are thinking of visiting its vibrant metropolitan capital city, Seoul, to catch up with the global phenomenon, instead of checking in to an expensive hotel that may burst your budget, why not consider one of these cosy yet inexpensive Airbnb apartments right in the heart of Seoul? Staying in one of these local homes will definitely make your Hallyu trip a memorable one!

1. Samsung Cyber Village Apartment (삼성사이버빌리지아파트) at 10 Jungnim-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul

Located in Jung-gu, this private room in Samsung Cyber Village Apartment is well connected to major tourist attractions and other parts of the city by the nearby metro stations. It is a short 5-minute walk to Chungjeongno Station’s exit 5 (충정로역, Seoul Metro line 2 and 5), and a 10-minute walk to Seoul Station, with Seoul Metro line 1 and 4, a major railway station in Seoul connecting to other parts of Korea as well as the Incheon International Airport rail. Upon arrival at this apartment, you will be welcomed by the amiable Kim family. Although the mum can only speak Korean, do not worry about the language barrier as the son can speak English fairly well.

Located on level 15, this clean and recently remodelled apartment offers you an unobstructed view of its surroundings. The room may be small, but it is definitely well-equipped. The bed is comfortable for a good night’s rest, and if you need to do some computer work, feel free to use the computer in the room. There is also free Wi-Fi in the apartment. Thoughtful amenities such as a clothes rack with hangers is provided in the room, along with toiletries, towels and hair dryers in the toilet. Besides, you can help yourself to the food and drinks in the kitchenette. Feel free to watch TV in the living room. Complimentary homemade breakfast is also provided from 8.30 am to 9.00 am every morning.

From just 36 USD per night, this private room homestay is a steal for solo travellers, with a strategic location and a pleasant host to make you feel at home throughout your stay!

2. Liga Apartment (리가아파트) at Blk 104, Mallidong 1(il)-ga, Jung-gu, Seoul

If you are travelling with a partner or two and can speak some Korean, check out this traditional Korean ondol (heated) room stay at Liga Apartment Blk 104 with a hospitable host who lives alone.

Also located in Jung-gu, this apartment is slightly nearer to Seoul Station than apartment #1. The spacious apartment boasts great views of the highest point in Seoul - the N Seoul Tower - and you can relax on the massage chair in the living room while soaking in the beautiful views of the city centre.

There will be plenty of chances to practise your Korean language skills as the host is a chatty granny who can talk about anything under the sky. If you need to do your laundry, she will be glad to assist. In addition, it is unlikely you will feel starved at any time during your stay for she is bound to feed you with lots of good food and beverages. Just like apartment #1, toiletries, towels and hair dryer are provided in the toilet and you can feel free to surf on the large selection of cable channels on TV in the living room.

Although there is no bed in the room for you to sleep on, sleeping on the ondol floor with a futon mattress and blanket just like what the locals do can be a great experience. This is exactly what you will experience if you visit a traditional sauna in Korea too. The room is spacious for 2 persons to sleep in, and if need be, you can also rent the other vacant room with the same heated floor concept.

Price for 1 room starts from 37.20 USD per night, which is a real bargain considering the splendid view, superb location and warm hospitality you will receive from the lovely host!

Hence, she decided to start this homestay to help create a memorable holiday for guests that are visiting Seoul. She is friends with the host at apartment #2, so if you have problems communicating with granny, she will be happy to assist too.

As a licenced Korean tour guide, Aunt Lee is a wonderful host who can provide you with great information on where to go, eat and drink as well as specific directions on how to get there. She can speak and write in fluent Chinese, and possess a fair command of English language too.
