Going to the Grand Canyon and driving Route 66 are bucket list items for most people. An intersection of these two bucket list items can be found in a place called Williams, Arizona. Technically a small town located an hour south from the Grand Canyon, and at the end of Route 66, this quirky town is a site to see in and of itself. Right in the middle of all the action is the historic Grand Canyon Hotel, the oldest in Arizona, dating back from 1891.

Feels like home

The Grand Canyon Hotel from across the street

As soon as you walk in the door, it feels like you’ve entered the historic home of a friend or even a tourist attraction. Wooden floors with plush rugs and comfortable couches add to the rustic feel of the lobby. You’ll find the check-in desk close by, with a few bills from the countries of past visitors. The hotel is still family owned, and the owners pay attention to detail and warmly welcome everyone to their hotel. There is free parking available behind the hotel, but the lot may get full quite quickly. The hotel lobby and dining area somewhat invoke a hostel feel to it, where you can just sit down comfortably at the tables & chairs and mingle with the other guests staying in the hotel.

Uniquely themed rooms that inspire

The Nautical Room at the Grand Canyon Hotel

Every single room in the hotel has a theme of its own, adding to the uniqueness of the rooms available. There are no two rooms alike, so if you decide to stay again, you can stay in a different room and get a different view. Do remember to book early: more than three months in advance, as the full size rooms get booked pretty quickly. The nautical room has a view of Route 66, and has framed photos of ships and lighthouses. There are shells that are dotted on the dresser, and even the comforter and the pillows have that nautical touch. The level of detail is amazing, and can be enough to inspire you to go and visit the beach. The nautical room has its own ensuite bathroom and shower, and is affordable at 78 USD per night.

A Western show on your doorstep

The Cataract Creek Gang performing

The hotel does not have most of the amenities you will expect from a chain hotel – you’ll get the basics like shampoo, soap, and a towel. There are no free breakfasts or swimming pool on the site, and there is no fitness center either. However, daily at 7PM, you can get to watch the Cataract Street Gang in their signature Wild West Show, almost right in front of the hotel. It’s a fun and family friendly show where you will hear gunfire and plenty of laughs. The show is quite long, and be sure to tip the performers at the end. After the show, you can opt to spend a few extra minutes browsing the numerous shops on Route 66 or head on over to a restaurant such as Station 66 Italian Bistro to have your meal.

Great for a stopover to the Grand Canyon and to see Williams

If you want to stay at a historic hotel with its own charm, then the historic Grand Canyon Hotel is definitely for you. It’s great for a stopover enroute to the Grand Canyon, or even as a pitstop in Williams to enjoy the train & Bearizona. For a charming, affordable, and memorable stay, this hotel should definitely be on your list.
