Denshadoori is a very intimate restaurant near Koshigoe Station in Kanamura. It only has 5 areas to sit where you can face the restaurant staff while they prepare your meal. Right outside of the restaurant is where the Enoshima Electric Railway, also known as Enoden, runs through the town. Thus you can listen, see, and feel the train pass by when you eat your lunch. The wonderful thing about having lunch here is that it is only 700 JPY (6 USD) during the weekdays, and very kind to traveler’s wallets.

Take a walk from Enoshima Station to Denshadoori

Many people visiting this area enjoy walking between Enoshima Station and Koshigoe Station which takes roughly 8 to 10 minutes. It is because this is the only area where Enoden runs through the township, thus you can walk directly next to Enoden.

Of course, you can start your journey from either of the station, but in this case, I started from Enoshima Station to head to Denshadoori. The restaurant is only 6 minutes from Enoshima Station and 2 minutes from Koshigoe Station. You’ll be greeted by sparrows dressed in warm knitted hats and clothes at Enoshima Station. They are very famous, and the local person changes the sparrow’s clothes daily, so definitely check their clothes when you get off at the station. However, they are likely to be dressed differently from the picture. The land is flat, making for an easy walk to Denshadoori. You may not even break a sweat during the 6 minutes or so, but on a sunny day, it is a pretty easy walk where you can feel the wind and hear the sound of Enoden passing right next to you.

Find your seat at Denshadoori

As indicated earlier, Denshadoori is an intimate restaurant that only has 5 seats. When you hear only 5 seats, you may think this is a very expensive restaurant, but that is wrong. During the weekdays, there are two lunch options, Osashimi Gozen (a raw fish meal) and Nizakana Gozan (a cooked fish meal), both only costing 700 JPY (6 USD) each. During weekends, they serve Kaisen Don (a seafood bowl) and Nama-shirasu Don (a raw young sardine bowl), costing 1,000 JPY (8 USD) each. Seafood provided by this restaurant is very fresh, and the price is very kind to visitors. The reason for this cheap but fresh lunch is because the restaurant is ran by a local fish store who directly purchases fish from the local market, which is across from the restaurant. It is a small restaurant where taste and freshness is guaranteed, and because of that, locals as well as travelers are eager to find a seating at this restaurant.

Savor fresh local fish at Denshadoori

During weekdays, there are only two lunch options at Denshadoori which come with rice, miso soup, seafood tempura, and tsukemono (pickles) as a base, and then you choose your fish options from either sashimi or cooked fish. Because this area, Shonan, is famous for shirasu, young sardines, the seafood tempura has shirasu tempura as a part of it. On the day of my visit, I chose cooked yellowtail, buri, as my option of cooked fish and it was so good! Lunch at Denshadoori is well balanced, serving the perfect portion for only 700 JPY (6 USD), which is cheaper than others found in this area. Because Enoshima and Kamakura are popular tourist destinations, lunch often costs you around 1000 JPY (8 USD) or more, so what Denshadoori offers during the weekdays is remarkable. In addition, what you are provided is what Japanese call “ofukuro no aji”, meaning the taste of a home cooked meal. So if you are getting tired of eating heavy Japanese food, you might want to give your stomach a little break by eating at Denshadoori.

The local spot found by the railway

Along Enoden there is a popular place to visit for tourists who are eager to experience the rich ocean life that Sagami Bay has to offer. A lot of places are very touristy which can be fun, but if you are seeking something a little more intimate and relaxed, visit Denshadoori where you can enjoy fresh local food and also casually chat with the restaurant staff. After getting full, you can walk to Koshigoe Station, which is the next Enoden train station, only 2 minutes on foot, or walk around Koshigoe and perhaps visit Manpuku-ji Temple to learn a little about the history of this area.

A local Kamakura restaurant where a single traveler can dine easily

Denshadoori is open daily from 11:00am until they finish serving the last plate of lunch, thus if you want to eat here, I recommend you go early. There are only 5 counter seats available allowing you to chat with the restaurant staff while you enjoy the fresh local food. If you’re fond of seafood and like to communicate with locals, this is a great spot to stop by when you visit around the Enoshima or Kamakura areas. The staff here are very friendly, so if you ask they can certainly recommend great places to visit, and perhaps introduce you to some local spots that may not be in a guidebook. This intimate atmosphere also allows single traveler to step into a restaurant more easily than places where a lot of guests come in groups or couples. Since it is a small restaurant, they do not take credit cards, so please make sure to have enough cash to pay at the register.
