Imagine paradise. What do you see, feel, taste, and smell? Perhaps it’s a warm jungle breeze that blows steadily and softly, keeping the temperature forever pleasant. Are there birds chirping, and is there a light afternoon drizzle (or a brief afternoon downpour) that helps the day transition into a peaceful night? Maybe there are abundant coconuts and other tropical fruits to keep you feeling fresh; maybe there’s no shortage of tasty food. Perhaps you find yourself in a constant state of serenity.

Ubud, an inland town on Bali, Indonesia, is nothing short of paradise. Walk any direction from the town center and you’ll find yourself amidst rolling rice fields surrounded by thick jungled woods, all in the world’s brightest shades of green. In town, which is a health and spiritual hub for many, juice shops, raw and vegan restaurants, yoga studios, and healing retreats abound, so there’s always somewhere to go for a bit of self-improvement.

For the ultimate experience in self-discovery, reflection, health, fitness, and serenity, Ubud’s famous Yoga Barn is the place to go. Set back down a narrow, flower-covered path and encompassing a few studios as well as lodging, dining, and a healing center, Yoga Barn is a must-visit for any traveler to Ubud, even if you don’t think you like yoga!

Yoga Barn offers a range of yoga and meditation classes, suited for everyone from the novice through to the seasoned yogis. With a class atmosphere that’s challenging yet fun, Yoga Barn encourages new students to try poses they never thought possible; you might find yourself upside-down in your first class (make sure there’s someone spotting you!). From Vinyasa Flow, which encourages continuous movements and emphasizes the importance of breath, to Iyengar, which focuses on precision and control in each pose, Yoga Barn’s course schedule lets visitors try their hands at a variety of yoga styles. For the advanced yogi, this can mean delving deeply into their practice, and learning new techniques from Yoga Barn’s international roster of teachers. For yoga newbies, this can be a fantastic opportunity to discover the kind of yoga best suited to your physical capabilities and desires. For all Yoga Barn patrons, the diverse schedule enables fun experimentation, whether it’s through a Sound Meditation class or an Acro Yoga workshop.

A single class at Yoga Barn costs 130,000 IDR (roughly 10 USD), but visitors can save on a five, ten, twenty, or unlimited class pack. (A 20-class pack, for instance, costs 1,400,000 IDR, which comes to roughly 5 USD per class.) Yoga Barn provides all necessary yoga accessories for students, not only mats, but also blocks, straps, and bolsters to deepen the practice. This enables students of all levels to learn and practice freely together.

Yoga Barn’s facilities are uniquely beautiful. Two open-air studios, the upstairs covered decks of two large wooden structures, hold the most popular classes and workshops. There are no walls, so it truly feels like you are doing yoga in the middle of the jungle. The breeze blows lightly in all directions through the posing, moving students, lined up in rows across the vast wooden floor. When it rains, as does happen at times in jungle paradise, the loud pitter-patter atop the structures’ vast wooden roofs only strengthens yoga’s meditative powers, washing away any worries or distractions. As day fades into evening, the sounds of chirping bugs and birds grow stronger, and the cooler temperatures encourage students to work harder, to sweat more, and to breathe deeper.

While the downstairs studios aren’t out in the jungle in the same way as the upstairs decks, in which students can truly feel at one with the trees, the floor-to-ceiling windows keep these rooms bright, airy, and scenic. The rooms face out onto lush fields, trickling waterfalls, and glistening ponds, and offer an intimate and quiet yoga experience.

Beyond the classes, Yoga Barn is a lifestyle

One could spend a week in Ubud and never leave Yoga Barn. From the quaint garden bungalows in the back (an optional place for yogis to stay, though many opt to stay elsewhere in town) to the all-day café at the campus’ core and the healing center offering massages, spiritual therapy, and more, Yoga Barn offers a holistic path to recovery and peace. Even for those new to the world of meditation, shamanism, yogic theory, and spirituality, Yoga Barn’s courses and programs are accessible and inspiring. For an emotional yet restorative experience, female visitors to Yoga Barn should attend a Women’s Circle session. Shamanic Breathwork is another option for those seeking growth.

The Garden Kafe at Yoga Barn serves up a menu of healthy fare, catering to everyone from the raw vegan (the raw pizza is a must-have) to the sandwich addict (they make a divine grilled cheese). Every other Monday night, The Garden Kafe hosts a family-friendly buffet featuring a vast selection of international dishes. The buffet coincides with Yoga Barn’s bi-weekly movie night, offering a relaxing and often educational activity for an otherwise quiet Ubud night.

Finding healing and calm in the Bali jungle

Ubud is the kind of place that beckons a return visit. Even though the town is small, there’s no shortage of activities and new discoveries. Yoga Barn is the embodiment of all that’s lovely about Ubud, encompassing the town’s signature healing lifestyle and scenery. Travelers to Bali would be remiss not to visit Ubud’s jungled beauty, and a visit to Ubud isn’t complete without a class or twenty at Yoga Barn.
