Ian Fleming - from British Intelligence to author

Born on May 28, 1908, Ian Fleming started out as a stockbroker before being recruited into the Royal Navy in 1939. The beginning ideas of what would become James Bond started with Fleming’s role as a commander in Britain’s Naval Intelligence Division during World War II.

Under his codename, 17F0, Fleming helped plan and conduct several Allied intelligence operations throughout Europe. This included Operation Goldeneye where the Allies were asked to keep a close eye on Spain and maintain contact with Gibraltar in case the country joined the Axis. All this wartime experience, plus his career as a journalist, would lead to the James Bond novels and, later, movies we all know and love–with his first novel, Casino Royale, releasing in 1952.

He would continue to write 11 more James Bond novels from 1953 to 1964 at his Jamaican home, which he named Goldeneye. Sadly, Fleming was a heavy smoker and drinker which resulted in him succumbing to heart disease in 1964 at the age of 56.
