Indonesia’s Yogyakarta has a lot of beautiful and interesting places that you can visit. You would need more than a week if you want to fully explore Yogyakarta. But if you only have one day, you can visit several places that are nearby, like Kulon Progo Region of Yogyakarta. Kulon Progo recently became known as the jewel of Java and also became a popular region that has a lot of tourist destinations. It is second to Gunung Kidul Region. Gunung Kidul is famous for its several nearby beaches, whereas Kulon Progo has more diverse tourist destinations such as beaches, a tourism village, natural parks, forests, and many more.

In 12 hours, you can visit four nearby destinations in Kulon Progo. Starting at Kedung Pedut Waterfall, you can continue to Kalibiru Tourism Village, then head to Sermo Reservoir, and end at Glagah Beach. If you start from Yogyakarta International Airport, it will take you 50 minutes by car (without traffic) to get to Karang Pedut, which is located in the village of Girimulyo. From Karang Pedut, it is around 37 minutes to Kalibiru Tourism Village, then another 35 minutes to Sermo Reservoir, and finally about 1 hour and 23 minutes to go to Glagah Beach to watch the sunset.

Here’s an overview of each great destination:

Kedung Pedut Waterfall

Kedung Pedut has a beautiful blue-turquoise color that gives a cool impression and invites you to swim in it. You can feel the freshness and the coolness after you plunge into the water!

Kalibiru Tourism Village

The second destination is Kalibiru Tourism Village (Desa Wisata Kalibiru), a natural tourism spot in Kulon Progo. The journey requires a car or motorcycle in good condition and an expert driver to get there because the road is very steep and narrow with sharp turns.

Located in the Menoreh Hills, 450 meters (1,746 feet) above sea level, it provides great views for everyone who visits. Kalibiru Tourism Village provides villas for visitors, and also outdoor activities such as a flying fox; you just need to pay 2,000 IDR (approximately 0.15 USD) for the entrance ticket.

A popular thing to do is to take a picture from the pine tree. You can take a romantic picture with your loved one, or get a great snap of your kids at one of the wooden boards installed around the pine tree. The ticket to go up the pine tree is 10,000 IDR (approximately 0.76 USD) and the photographer will take several pictures of you; you can choose a minimum of 4 pictures, and the price for one picture is 5,000 IDR (approximately 0.38 USD).

An affordable price for a one-day journey

You will spend no more than 150,000 IDR (approximately 11.50 USD) to visit four destinations in one day (admission costs and parking), but for an easier journey for the less confident drivers, I would recommend renting a car with a driver for 600,000 IDR (approximately 45.80 USD). Even after returning to Yogyakarta, you will find that you still have time to buy some souvenirs!
