Approaching the Frederick Inn Bed and Breakfast after exiting Highway 270, one sees all things new and modern along the Buckeystown Pike. Soon enough, all that modernity fades away and a few farms and old homes come into view. As if by magic, Buckeystown appears with its shops and homes looking as if nothing has changed since Civil War troops marched through the county in 1863, and presently, the Frederick Inn is in The Heart of The Civil War Heritage Area. Buckeystown was an important place in the 1800s with a history of thriving industries. Workers produced bricks, limestone, blacksmith goods, animal hides, and there was a creamery as well.

Even though the inn provided a complimentary stay, this is not a sponsored post and the writer’s opinions are his own.

A historic home

The Frederick Inn was built by Charles Keller in 1897. Mr. Keller owned a nearby limestone quarry, had worked as a blacksmith and a coach maker. Charles was an educated man who took over the family business of lime mining and processing until his death in 1917. His former home is now one of Frederick’s best kept secrets for those seeking a historic B&B experience.

In 2012, the home was renovated and became Frederick Inn under the ownership of Kirk and Pat Horstman. The Horstman’s took three years to meticulously renovate the inn and proudly opened the doors in 2015. All of the bathrooms were updated to provide clean and modern features. Bedrooms were updated with ultra-comfy new mattresses, linens, and air conditioning. Presently, nine guestrooms are on offer, five rooms on the second floor, and the other four on the third floor.

Third floor is perfect for families

Rooms on the second floor are perfect for couples and have ensuite bathrooms, Turkish towels, and luxury amenities. Find plenty of space in these uncluttered rooms, some with walk-out balconies. The third floor rooms share common bathrooms. Families or groups will find the third floor an excellent choice and the hosts will block out the other rooms on the third floor so you have it all to yourself. Both the third floor and second floor have a beverage station in the hallway stocked with an assortment of cold drinks, coffee, and tea.

All guest rooms come with a hair dryer, iron, ironing board, alarm clock, and modern power strips for charging your devices. Complimentary Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the inn. Breakfast is a highlight of your stay at the Frederick Inn. On any given day you might be served a raspberry scone, baked apple tart, or omelet of the day. Enjoy breakfast in the dining room or on the outdoor wrap-around porch in good weather.

The ground floor has sitting areas with fireplaces and big windows letting in sunlight. Old-time hardwood floors accent area carpeting in most of the sitting areas. Pay attention to the beautiful hardwood staircase leading to the second floor; it’s made of chestnut and is a work of art.

What's in the area

Owners Kirk and Pat know the area well and are a good resource to get the most out of your trip. The Frederick Inn puts you in close range to the Monocacy Battlefield, 30+ restaurants in short driving distance of the inn, and downtown Frederick is only a 10-minute drive away. The Westview Promenade Shopping Center is only about a five-minute drive and has several chain restaurants, ethnic restaurants, a movie theater, a natural grocery store, and more in and around this shopping area. Check out Silver Diner, one of my favorite restaurants in the area for lunch or dinner at the Westview Promenade Shopping Center. Try the shrimp and grits or any of the locally sourced fresh menu options at the Silver Diner for an excellent meal.

For trips a bit further from the inn, explore some of the wineries in the area like Big Cork, Black Ankle, or Springhill Manor. If you are looking for some outdoor fun, don’t miss the C&O Canal and its 184 mile (296 km) long trail, or Gambrill State Park for fishing, hiking, or a picnic. In the spring and early summer the Monocacy River is a fun place to kayak or canoe.

All you need

The town of Frederick has all you need for a fun-filled trip. The Frederick Inn is one of the best places to stay when you need lodging in the area.
