A landmark hotel

Atami is known as the gateway to Izu and as the cornerstone of the Izu Peninsula. Atari Korakuen Hotel is a large size hotel that sits right on the shore of Atami Bay.

The hotel is divided into the Tower Building and the Misaki Building, with the Tower Building boasting a full 18 floors full of guest rooms with ocean views! Often called the Naples of the Orient, the nighttime scenery from the hotel is stunning. Lights reflect off the ocean at night, and you can see Atami’s Sun Beach area lit up blue to resemble a moonlit beach. There are also fireworks events going on throughout the year. Watch as fireworks are launched from the water’s surface! Combined with the already amazing night scenery, it’s sure not to disappoint!

On the very top floor there’s a restaurant (open for lunch only) and bar/lounge area. A cocktail at the bar overlooking the night ocean view is a great way to spend a romantic evening.

Atami’s one-of-a-kind amusement park

Pictured above is Atami’s Apio Amusement Park. It’s on the hotel grounds and is accessible via a walkway from the 2nd floor. There are lots of rides to please the kids, like the Sky Cycle and Sky Ship! In the summer and during Japan’s Golden Week holidays, they have super hero events and even autograph signings. In the summer there are lots of families with children in tow. The pool is open, too!

Entrance to the park is free for hotel guests, and they have an unlimited rides plan for kids, perfect if you have children who really love amusement parks. For more information, visit the hotel’s website at the bottom of the page.

The hotel also has a nursery room with a diaper changing table, so parents with infants can have a worry-free stay.

Take a ride on the ropeway

Atami Ropeway. The boarding platform is right next to the hotel. It’s easy to find – just head out the exit and continue to the right.

The Atami Ropeway runs behind the hotel, from the foot to the summit of Mt. Hachiman. As you ascend the ropeway, Atami Bay and the city center of Atami come into breathtaking view. The incline is pretty steep, which makes for an exhilarating ride up.

The ride through the open air takes around 3 minutes. There’s plenty to do at the peak for couples, including a visit to Atami Hihokan erotic museum (must be at least 18 years old to enter), the cape of love, and Atami Castle, which boasts the best views in Atami.

The view at 160 meters above sea level

Just look at that view! The picture above was taken from the top floor of Atami Castle at a viewing deck in the castle tower. You can get a 360 degree view from the tower, which looks out over Atami City, Yugawara and Manazuru Peninsula, the Hakone mountain range, Hatsushima Island floating in the water, Oshima Island, and even all the way to Boso Peninsula on a clear day!

The picture is the view looking out over Atami City. The blue sky and water are gorgeous, and the hotels and onsens lined up on the hilly, slanting shore are the hallmark of Atami.

Atami Castle is open until 5:00PM, meaning that if you go in winter you can catch a rare view of night falling over Atami. It’s a great opportunity, but be careful, because the last car going back down on the ropeway is at 5:30PM.

Atami Castle reflects the architecture styles of Japan’s Momoyama Era (1583-1600AD) and beginning of the Keicho Era that followed. The tower is adorned with a statue of a shachihoko, an animal with the head of a lion and the body of a carp, measuring 2.96 meters tall. The shachihoko at the castle entrance is said to be “actual size”. Mount it like a horse and take a souvenir photo!

Inside the castle, guests can check out kabuto samurai helmets and samurai armor, castle models, and photographs in the Samurai Museum and Castle Archives. There’s even a water-jet foot spa in the castle!

At the Atami Trick Art Museum, visitors can check out optical illusion art. There’s definitely no shortage of things to do at Atami Castle.

Located just 3 minutes from the Atami Ropeway summit station, a trip to the castle is worth it, even if just for the view!

Make a memory at the cape of love

make a memory at the cape of love

This is the Cape of Love, located a short walk from the summit station of the Atami Ropeway. In Japan, this cape is thought to be a sacred place for lovers, and the monument on the cape is a place where couples can hang ema, wooden plaques where Shinto followers write prayers. Those left at the Cape of Love are said to come true!

At a shop nearby couples can purchase ema that come with a lock and two keys. After hanging the ema, the couples can keep the keys as treasured souvenirs. The ema that have been left during the year are burned in a temple ceremony on New Years. You and your partners’ dreams are sure to come true!

At Atami Korakuen Hotel, you can also use the 100% natural onsen to your heart’s content. The Tower Building has the umi-no-yu bath, which overlooks the ocean, and the Misaki Building has the yama-no-yu, which has a mountain view. You can try both and enjoy the contrasting landscapes. It’s a chloride bath that’s said to be good for warming up the body, so it’s great for fighting off the cold.

The bath is open to non-hotel guests as well, and if you show your ticket from Atami Ropeway, you get a discount! You can also use the Apio Amusement Park for a discount as well. Only the Misaki Buiding’s yama-no-yu is available to outside visitors, but it’s spacious bath with plenty of lush, soothing mountain scenery on display.

The Atami Korakuen Hotel is right in the middle of all of Atami’s most charming spots! It’s the perfect place to get away and spending a relaxing time. Atami is accessible from Tokyo by bullet train in only 50 minutes. Shuttle buses run regularly from Atami Station to the hotel for added convenience.
