Hakone-Yumoto is an easy to access popular sightseeing spot known for its hot springs. I will now introduce a Japanese style ryokan inn called “Yoshiike Inn”. It owns the garden of the old Iwasaki Clan Villa, which is designated as a national cultural property. The Japanese-style garden has a wide area of 10 000 square meters and is beautiful in all four seasons. There are also 6 freely-flowing hot springs. You can stay in a spacious room and watch the garden or you can walk around and relax in a hot spring. This place provides plenty of opportunity for a nice holiday!

Relax in a hot spring! Even the day trip visit is good

Hakone-Yumoto Station is the entrance of Hakone and the inn is located just 7 minutes away on foot from it. From the busy shopping street it takes a little climbing uphill. There is a café corner with a view to the garden in the lobby of Yoshiike Inn. Here you can have a delicious coffee and a small cake. At the nearby “Steak House Yoshiike” you can eat lunch which includes dishes prepared on a hot steel plate! Even guests of other inns come to this restaurant for the steaks. If your lunch bill exceeds 3000 JPY per person, then you’ll get a half-price discount for the hot springs. This is a great way to enjoy lunch, a walk in the garden and the hot springs in a day trip.

Walking around the national cultural property the old Iwasaki Clan Villa

The old Iwasaki Clan Villa belonged to Iwasaki Yanosuke, the younger brother of Iwasaki Yataro who established Mitsubishi company. Its spacious Japanese-style garden features the tea-room “Shinkoan”, inherited by the 14th generation of the Tokugawa clan, and still preserves a traditional atmosphere. The garden is truly impressive and managed very well, so it’s a pleasure to walk around.

Feeding the colored carp fish is one of the main attractions for children. You can buy some feed at the inn’s front desk. There are a total of 12 hot water springs that you can see while you walking in the garden. The pH index of the water is 8.7-8.9, which means it’s highly alkaline and good for the skin.

The spacious Japanese-style room

There are many types of rooms in Yoshiike Inn, but I stayed at a Japanese-style one which actually consists of two connected rooms. It’s called “Ike no Mune” and has a total of 18-tatami mat space, suitable for 5 to 10 guests. Similar rooms in other inns are divided by a sliding screen, but here they’re connected. There are 2 toilets and 2 washing rooms, which is very convenient for bigger groups. Different futons are prepared for people of different age and sex. From the window you can have a great view to the beautiful garden.

The dinner uses fresh seafood from Sagami and Suruga Bay, seasonal ingredients from Odawara and Ashigara and local products. Everything is prepared with much care and consideration.

No frozen ingredients are used and every dish has a seasonal taste. The menu changes monthly. On the photo you can see the summer dishes. I should also mention that the breakfast here is fantastic too. You will start your day with special treats such as delicious dried food and steamed seasoned fish paste.

Conclusion

Hakone attracts plenty of tourists with the pirate ship on Lake Ashi and the good-quality hot springs. In autumn Yoshiike Inn’s garden is magnificent with its colors. I strongly recommend choosing this accommodation when you’re planning your trip to Hakone.
