Hallstatt is undoubtedly beautiful all year round no matter what season you’re going. While the hills in Salzburg are alive with the sound of music and Austria’ capital Vienna is famous for museums, opera houses, coffee culture and so much more, let us convince you why you should also visit Hallstatt. It’s so easy to get to Hallstatt: you can either drive, take a bus or train to Attnang Pucheim then change to Hallstatt and from there you can take a ferry across the lake for only EUR3/one way.

More than just nature

Hallstatt, Winter Wonderland

The small village was historically very wealthy. Being well known for the oldest operating salt mines in the world for more than 7000 years with its oldest staircase in Europe you can still visit in Hallstatt. Many tourists choose to visit Hallstatt for a day but if you have extra time, it’s actually worth to spend a night or two here since there are plenty things to do. There are many guest houses and hotels with the room rate starting from EUR60/night. Restaurants offering wide variety of food from pasta, steak to wienerschnitzel, also local bakeries where you can get Krapfen or Austrian jam filled donuts and coffee. This is the place to be if you want to reconnect with nature, spend some time with your loved ones or even retire.

A magical winter wonderland

Hallstatt in winte

Nothing can beat the charm of Hallstatt in winter. There’s something magical when you walk along the lake and see a group of swans, the hills covered in snow, layers of mountains and the clouds linger between the lake and the hills. It’s peaceful, quaint and unbelievably charming. Especially during the most wonderful time of the year where the local put Christmas decorations, play the classic Christmas carols and oh the smell of mulled wine and fresh bread in the morning. It is less crowded around this time which makes it even better to visit this village. For a second you think you’re in the magical world of Narnia or Frozen, but the truth is Hallstatt in winter is nothing short of magical everyone should experience.

More things to do

Hallstatt town

When in Hallstatt, visit the Old Town and Market Square. Then continue take a walk along the lake up to classic village viewpoint or the postcard angle spot where tourists usually take a perfect picture of Hallstatt village. There’s nothing like starting a new day here where it’s quiet, some tourists still asleep or getting ready. From there you can walk back to the Old Town and visit the Skywalk Hallstatt to enjoy the spectacular view of Lake Hallstatt from panoramic platform. Open everyday from 9 am to 4.30 pm, you can join the Hallstatt Salt Mine tour and purchase the ticket for EUR34 roundtrip. This is including the roundtrip ride on the Salzburg funicular, admission and guided tour at Hallstatt Salt Mine and panoramic platform, also a visit to an ancient burial site.
