A guesthouse built to aid in fellow travelers getting along!

Gekkousou is a 3 minute walk from Kokusai Dori, right by Miebashi station on the Yui Rail line. A guesthouse is an accommodation which is cheaper than a hotel or a B&B to stay at, but the bathroom and toilet are shared amongst other guests.

Room types are: Dormitory 1500 JPY and up Single room 2500 JPY and up So, it is extremely affordable and kind on traveler’s wallets. The dormitory rooms have several bunk beds and are comfortable.

The concept is to "make a complete communal space where all can gather"

At Gekkousou sleeping areas are kept to a minimum to create as complete and spacious area where people can gather easily. For this reason, it’s comfortable here for travelers who like to get to know others.

Also, Gekkousou is a wooden building which has been customized continuously for the last 60 years by staff, creating a unique and cool interior! With an interior that is free of rules that would apply to a nice designers hotel, it appeals to free spirited travelers. This interior is one of the reasons Gekkousou is popular.

For those manga lovers amongst us, you may look at Gekkousou and think “I’ve seen that before somewhere”. Yes. The guesthouse in “Afro Tanaka” is modeled after Gekkousou. In the manga the name was changed a bit to “Tsukimisou” (which is similar in kanji) but the atmosphere and even the art that is hung here is the same in the manga. If you’re lucky you might even run into a few people that are the basis for some of the characters in the manga, which is something you probably won’t find anywhere else.

Affordably priced Okinawan seasonal food!

The best part of Gekkousou has to be “everyday there is a party in the common area”. Even the owner calls it “a bar where you can stay the night”, where the area to commune is perfectly designed. The staff cooks anything Okinawan that is in season and everyone eats at a big table, almost like a big family feast. Drink Awamori quietly or discuss, with a glass in hand of course, anything with fellow travelers.

Anyone can come to these parties, the fee depends on what is on the menu but for the most part it is around 600 JPY making it very reasonable to join in.

For those that become fast friends, head next door to “Tabibito Sakaba Tsukinowa”! A bar where you can drink ‘til morning. You don’t have to be a staying guest to join here either.

In the morning the bar Tabibito Sakaba Tsukinowa’s counter turns into Tsukinowa Shokudou. Daily special breakfast 500 JPY Simple breakfast 300 JPY There are other items which use seasonal ingredients and are reasonable too.

Our favorite was Banana Juice. Made with fresh bananas and milk, the sweet deliciousness of Banana Juice is just spectacular! The other items on the menu by chef “Tenko-san” are all health conscious and made into Japanese dishes that take you back to childhood. Every dish is really kind on your hungover body! Lol

Tsukinowa Shokudo is also open to the public. Even if you aren’t staying here have some breakfast here before you go out to explore Okinawa.
