When you Google “villa” in Bali, your search result is likely to show places in Ubud or Canggu. Unfortunately, those places can be quite expensive and not suitable for backpackers. There are cheap villas available in other parts of Bali, but the problem is they are located in less popular areas which sometimes are not easily accessible. So, my quest to find affordable villa in Bali began. Little did I know, there is one less than a mile (1.6 km) away from where I live. Yes, that is how hidden it is!

This peaceful villa is located in Denpasar. Called The Joglo Guest House Bali, this place embodies the architecture and design of Javanese traditional houses, joglo or omah. The Joglo is located near one of Denpasar’s main roads. The main street is quite busy with stores and restaurants on it. However, the villa is surprisingly quiet and peaceful. Unlike most villas, you can also rent the rooms separately. This way, you don’t have to book the whole villa to experience the privacy and exclusivity a villa can offer.

We handpicked these listings carefully, considering (wherever possible) Superhost status, recent guest reviews, location, accommodation type, prices, availability of dates, decor, and amenities. The image galleries get refreshed with the latest updates regularly. They were last updated on January 31, 2024.

It is worth the search! (from USD 18)

Hidden Villa Denpasar | The Joglo Guest House Bali

The Joglo Guest House is located in Denpasar which is the capital city of Bali, but it can be quite tricky to find. Even though it is easily accessed from one of Denpasar’s main roads, Jalan Gatot Subroto, it requires a bit of local knowledge to find the street where Joglo Guest House lies, but a local driver should be able to find it. The villa also provides its guest an airport pickup service. And if you’re on a backpacking walk, you could always ask around since it is in the middle of a city.

It may seem like too much effort needed just to find it on Jalan Wijaya Kusuma III, but once you do, you’ll know it was worth the search! Once you get there, you will see how homey, peaceful, and comfortable this place is. Located just behind the owner’s house, a security guard will take you to the reception desk. And don’t worry about your luggage. They will help you carry it to your room.

There are 14 villas with 15 rooms available for rent. Each of them have their own secluded area and garden with pathways leading to each room. And you can experience all of this villa exclusivity for just 200,000 IDR (approximately 15 USD) per room or 140,000 IDR (approximately 10 USD) per person! Bigger rooms are priced at 250,000 IDR (approximately 18.5 USD) per night.

Hidden Villa Denpasar | The Joglo Guest House Bali

One of the things I love about this villa, besides its price, is how traditional the design is. The building is made of teak wood with antique sliding doors and windows. I got the room inside villa number 5, which is one of the biggest places they have. I was spoiled with a private garden view. And as the rain came drizzling down, I could open the big glass window and become one with nature without leaving my comfortable bed.

Opened in January 2016, the furniture in Joglo Guest House is rather new and in good condition. The bed is more than big enough for two. Power outlets are available by the bed. They also provide extra beds for a room with more than two guests. The extra bed costs 100,000 IDR (approximately 7 USD) per person. There is plenty of space for you to put your stuff including inside a wardrobe, nightstands, and a dresser. And of course, all of them are made of wood.

Even though Joglo Guest House Bali embodies traditional design, the bathroom is quite modern. Some rooms have a bathtub, some only have shower. But on a hot tropical day, I would prefer a shower to a bath anytime. And the water pressure here is surprisingly good. Liquid soap and towels are included. Food and water are also available at reasonable prices.

The rooms inside their big villas, like the one I was staying in, have common rooms with a TV and comfortable couches available for all guests. A self-service kitchen is also provided, equipped with fridge, stove, microwave, and eating utensils.

Hidden Villa Denpasar | The Joglo Guest House Bali

The room’s exclusive comfort is not the only thing you will get. The owner of the Joglo Guest House assembles a team to cater to each guest’s needs. Staying here means you don’t have to worry about your itinerary. If you come straight from the airport, just let them know, and they will pick you up for 15 USD (approximately 200,000 IDR) per car. The service price is way cheaper than any taxi service you could get at Ngurah Rai Airport since online car services, such as Uber, are not allowed to pick up from the airport. Joglo Guest House has several drivers and cars on standby all the time for your convenience.

Besides that and room service for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, they help you with laundry and scooter rental as well. And if you don’t know where to go or you don’t have much time to explore the island yourself, just join the villa’s daily tour for only 10 USD (approximately 135,000 IDR) per person. They will take you on an 8 to 10 hour tour around some of the popular places in Bali, such as temples, factories, and plantations, and wrap it up with a Kecak Dance show or dinner by the beach. For more exclusivity, get a private tour for 40 USD (approximately 540,000 IDR) per car. The tour package may change due to weather and local holidays. Information is always available at the reception desk and booking line.

Need I remind you that it's only 10 USD (approximately 135,000 IDR)?

Finding this cheap villa so close to where I live was indeed a surprise. I passed this area a couple of times before and I couldn’t imagine there is a hidden gem of peaceful accommodation just around the corner. Now, I know we don’t have to go far up north to Ubud just to enjoy the exclusivity and privacy of a villa. It is available right here in Denpasar even for such an unbelievably cheap price!

There are a lot of other cheap accommodations in Denpasar. But finding one this comfortable with helpful good services is not easy. The Joglo Guest HouseVilla is quite popular among bed & breakfast and backpacking communities, so make sure you book a few days ahead prior to your arrival.
