In a city as bereft of history as Los Angeles, a hotel established in the day of the flappers is noteworthy in and of itself, but add in the allure of Hollywood’s Golden Age, price the rooms affordably, then provide free parking, and you have lodging clearly worth shortlisting for budget travelers. The “Historic Hollywood Hotel” has many architectural charms, a central location, and a vibrant, diverse neighborhood at its doorstep.

Welcome to the 1920s!

hotel facade

The hotel’s facade speaks of days gone by, but whispers of elegance still linger about. The classic period design is a delight to behold, spoiled only by the necessary addition of support girders on the first floor. Los Angeles is earthquake country after all, and you wouldn’t want to wake up (or not wake up) in a rubble of red brick, which is what unreinforced buildings are often reduced to after Big Ones in this part of the world.

Decor on a tasteful budget, with Hollywood reminders scattered about

room

The hotel’s halls feature pictures of celebrities out on the town from the 1920s roughly through the 1940s, but the touches don’t stop there. In your room, instead of inane pictures of rolling fields or mountains, you will find more Hollywood memorabilia. You’ll also find a comfy bed, period furniture, and a window-mounted air conditioner. Alas, the 1920s did not have central air. Feel the history!

An efficient bathroom that’s budget but not boring

bathroom

It’s tiny, so for bathroom loungers, this may not be the most satisfying experience. Most importantly, especially at the, ahem, lower price points, this bathroom is sparkly clean. Plenty of hot water, non-scratchy towels, and all the standard amenities are in place.

The lack of on-site food shall motivate you to discover the world beyond!

sausage

The neighborhood has gone through many changes since the late 1920s, and not all of them were good. Recent years, however, have seen ever rising property values, and an influx on slightly more monied types – all without the wholesale cultural displacement often associated with that dirty word “gentrification.” Predictably, neighborhood restaurants run the gamut. Do yourself a flavor and drop by La Fonda Antioquena for an amazing Colombian meal. The sausage, pictured above, just may change your life.

Within a few minutes’ walk, there are a number of restaurants to choose from, but don’t kid yourself: Los Angeles, aside from some narrowly defined corridors, is still a car city, so rent one if you don’t have one already. With said car, the famous parts of Hollywood, Sunset Strip, West Hollywood (the gay epicenter of Los Angeles), the La Brea Tar Pits, the LA County Museum of Art, the Petersen Automotive Museum, and so much more are all around ten minutes away.

Smack dab in the middle, with a price just south of that

For your next trip to Los Angeles, consider this clean, historic hotel, which is centrally located and has free parking, all for not much more than a C-note (that means a $100 bill, in case you’re not in the know). You’ve got better things to spend your money on than lodging in this town.
