Elegance and luxury grab your attention as soon as you enter the ornate lobby of the Hotel Du Pont. Four huge chandeliers light the seating area, and a curved wooden balcony presides over the room from the second floor. Your visit will not be an ordinary hotel stay.

Opened in 1913 after two and a half years of construction, Pierre S. du Pont must have been beaming with pride. Pierre was one of the most influential businessmen of his time as he led General Motors and du Pont Corporation during his life. Wilmington needed a grand hotel the likes of which Pierre had seen in his travels about Europe and thought a similar hotel would be an excellent addition to Delaware’s largest city. Mr. du Pont was instrumental in making the Hotel Du Pont a reality.

Choose your special room (from USD 439)

Currently boasting 217 rooms and suites, fine dining in the Green Room, The Playhouse Theater at Rodney Square, and tons of event space, this hotel has it all! The first order of business is to select a room or suite. All rooms are decorated in a grand European style while maintaining modern functionality. Amenities are first class. You will enjoy plush bathrobes and slippers for lounging about in the room. Bedding is of high quality for lulling you into a deep and restful sleep. Complimentary Wi-Fi or flat-screen TV plug you into the world at large, and a shower has all the water pressure you could desire.

Step up to a luxury king or queen room, and you get a large bathtub separate from the shower. The bathroom is highlighted in marble and appointed with Gilchrist and Soames toiletries. The bathroom is “white-glove” clean as is the room. The luxury rooms come with a sleeper sofa, large working desk, and separate makeup space with a magnifying mirror.

The suites offer the most luxurious accommodations. Featuring a separate dining room, living room, and half bath, you will have an ultimate refuge. Treat yourself to a long break in the deep soaking tub and ring room service for a bottle of champagne and snacks. Don’t spoil your appetite as the hotel’s Green Room is amongst Wilmington’s best fine dining.

The Green Room exudes opulence with its lavish window treatments, chandeliers, fine table linens, excellent food, and impeccable service. Rated four diamonds by AAA, this restaurant is a winner. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, enjoy starters like seafood bisque, pan seared foie gras, or a beet salad. Entrees are eye-catching with a grilled veal porterhouse, one of the best meat lover options. A seafood cioppino is a savory bowl full of the ocean’s best morsels, or take flight with the duck breast served with farro risotto and fava beans.

For an old-world luxury option try the Afternoon Tea service. Enjoy specialty teas inspired by the magnificent DuPont estates like Winterthur, Longwood, and Nemours. Snack on tasty treats, both sweet and savory, while you sip tea in style. For more down-to-earth drinks and snacks, check out the Green Room Bar between the lobby and the Green Room restaurant. For decades, business has been discussed in this classy bar. You can also catch sporting events on TV in the Green Room bar and order beer and wings if desired.

Weddings, business meetings, and special events are welcomed at the hotel. With a conference center and several smaller event venues, the Hotel DuPont can handle your function for 10 or up to 500. The Gold Ballroom was decorated in the French Neoclassic style and is dripping in ornate decorations and multiple layers of hand-etched colored plaster. The du Barry Room is said to be the most romantic event space in Delaware. Designed in the Federal style with pillars, parquet floor, and a Yugoslavian chandelier, George Washington would have felt at home here.

For reasons to come to Wilmington and the Hotel Du Pont, there are many. The hotel puts you in easy reach of the Delaware Children’s Museum, Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts, Delaware Art Museum, Nemours Mansion and Gardens, Hagley Museum and Library, Winterthur, and Longwood Gardens to name the main attractions.

Easy to get to

Getting here is easy by train or car. A car service is available for the downtown area, which includes pickup and drop off service to the Amtrak train station. Valet service is available for those who choose to drive to the hotel. When the time comes to leave, you will be saying goodbye to one of the most historic and beautiful hotels in the region. I believe you will want to return to enjoy comfort as Pierre S. DuPont intended.
