Agrigento is a city of Sicily, Italy located in the southern coast of the island. During the V century B.C, Agrigento was one of the most relevant colony of Magna Grecia: a group of colonies belonging to the Greek Empire, situated in Southern Italy during the ancient era.

In this beautiful area, you can discover amazing beaches and seascapes with a unique panorama and translucent water.

The southern coast of Sicily includes some of the wildest landscape of the entire island. Its geographical location, far from the biggest airports, preserves it from mass tourism.

In this area you can enjoy beautiful landscapes as the Valley of Temple near Agrigento, unique in the world. One of the peculiarities of this coast is the presence of cliffs of marl, a sedimentary rock particularly white and bright.

Along this coast you can find several villages as Realmonte, Porto Empedocle, Siculiana, Sciacca, Mazzara del Vallo where you can try delicious fish dishes, typical sweets and the typical Sicilian granita.

The picture above is a view of the seaside area between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle.

Be amazed by the brightness of Scala dei Turchi

Scala dei Turchi (“The Turkish Stairs”) look like a flow of a white and bright rock overlooking the sea.

Scala dei Turchi is made of marl, this typical rock I described above. Its peculiar shape, reminding us of stairs, is the consequence of wind erosion.

The name came from the frequents raids of the Moors, that Sicilians defined as “Turkish”, although they were coming from very diverse regions of the Arab world. Since then, this spot became very famous and many people visit it in summertime because they believe that the clay available on the beach is good for their skin. However, this behavior is dangerous both for the people and the rocks since this inappropriate use of clay damages the rocks

In order to reach Scala dei Turchi you have to cross the first sand beach walking about 5 minutes, and once you get to the cliff you can easily climb it to enjoy an amazing view on the sea. This is also the only way to get to the second sand beach, a beautiful bay.

Not even the most beautifully taken picture could describe the perfection of this seaside spot. If you are traveling along the southern coast of Sicily you cannot miss this unique place.

Enjoy the wide unspoiled natural area of Torre Salsa

Located between the coast of Siculiana and Eraclea Minoa, two little villages in the Agrigento area, you can find a protected natural area called Torre Salsa.

This area consists in cliffs, a beautiful 6-km long beach, little rivers and old ruins. Like the cliff of Scala dei Turchi, you can find sedimentary clay-rich rocks and the typical Mediterranean scrub nourished by the presence of little rivers flowing into the sea.

A part of the name (Torre) of this protected area, run by WWF, comes from the presence of a tower used as a guarding spot for the pirate raids. Salsa is the name of one of the river streams that you can also find here.

Torre Salsa is very close to Scala dei Turchi but it is not as famous as the latter. For this reason, it could be the perfect spot for you to enjoy a more relaxing and quiet experience.

Discover the vestiges of Eraclea Minoa, an ancient Greek colony nestled in nature

Nestled in this beautiful panorama you can find the vestiges and ruins of Eraclea Minoa, an old Greek colony founded in the middle of 6 century B.C. The name is the result of two myths concerning this area, one about the Greek hero Hercules and the other about Minos, king of Crete.

This archaeological site is located in a luxuriant natural area near Platani river. Here you can admire a Greek theater, an aqueduct, a necropolis and some old Greek and Roman houses.

Indeed this area has been conquered by different civilizations, in chronological order: the Greeks, the Carthaginians and the Romans. At the entrance of the archaeological area you can also visit a little museum with artefacts discovered nearby.

Sicily is an island full of natural and cultural treasures that will surprise you with its beautiful landscapes and cities.

In order to have a relaxing and free visit, you can rent a car and plan several stops during your trip. You can have an enjoyable experience along the southern coast of Sicily almost in every season of the year.
