Being the capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur is where you will find all the best things that the state has to offer. The border of the city is framed with pink walls which is why it is also called the Pink City. Though there is no shortage of stunning historical landmarks here, it can be said that one of the most magnificent monuments here is Jal Mahal. Standing tall in the center of the Man Sagar Lake, Jal Mahal is a five-story palace built back in the 18th century. The structure we see now is the result of years and years of renovation by past rulers and the government of India. For those who have never been to Jal Mahal, the vastness of the area surrounding the palace can be intimidating. But worry not, for here is a guide to Jal Mahal, Jaipur. Read and get ready to explore!
Things to do/Highlights
Admire the beauty of the Water Palace
The five-story fortress is undoubtedly the highlight of the site. The architecture of the building was influenced by Hindu and Mughal designs, evident through the extensive use of marble and red sandstone. The impression of the ornamental styles doesn’t just stop with the floor. Its high rampart, gates, and cobbled pathway clearly show a persistent use of those two styles.
Check out the rooftop garden
There is also a rooftop garden on the top of the palace which is divided into four sections. The fountains, the carefully sculpted balustrades, the ceilings covered with gold, and the ornamental murals. Each division is marked with a waterway and a fountain carved from marble. The garden also features a number of rotundas with golden metal pots and marvelous designs. Standing tall in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, this architectural wonder is truly a sight to behold. It carries the unmatched beauty of Jaipur all the way to its interior and architectural structure.
Travelers tips
Beware of tourist scams
Think twice before saying yes to any locals who offer to show you around at a price, especially when you have no idea how much the regular tour usually costs. Remember this golden rule to avoid getting ripped off. If you’re traveling solo or in a small group of people who have zero knowledge of the area, thus needing to have someone to show you around, opt to book an organized tour in advance from a trusted business entity.
Accessibility
Please keep in mind that the place is not equipped with wheelchair-friendly facilities, so if you or someone in your group has mobility issues, plan your trip accordingly.
Always carry cash
Since the site is located quite far from the city, it might be a bit impractical to shop using a debit or credit card. As such, always makes sure to go to a money exchange before traveling here and keep extra cash in local currency.
How to get there
Situated some kilometers away from the city of Jaipur, one may reach Jal Mahal by public transportation, car, and even on foot. If you feel like taking a bus, please be informed that the closest bus stop to the site is located 200 meters (0.12 miles) away from the site, at Shahpura Bagh Road. Unless you plan to do a bit of walking, it is recommended to use a taxi or rent a car with a chauffeur to reach this site.
By bus
This is by far the cheapest option to get to Jal Mahal. Take bus AC 5 and AC 1, and you will arrive at your destination in approximately 20 minutes.
By taxi
The best and safest option to arrive here without worrying about the commute is to take a taxi. If you’re not traveling on a budget, have a long list of places you want to see, and you are also pressed for time, choose this option. Jal Mahal is situated along Amer Road.
By private car or rental car
For those who plan to rent a car to get here, set off early to get the best parking space, since during peak hours it may become difficult to get a parking spot.
On foot
Choose this option only if you’re in no hurry and have roughly one and a half extra hours to spend. Type in Jal Maha’s full address on your GPS and get ready to walk the 8.3-kilometer (5.15-mile) distance from the center of Jaipur via Bramhpuri Road.
How to book tickets
The ticket to the site can be purchased via their official ticketing website, on-site, or even through third-party websites. Usually, these websites won’t just offer a single ticket to the site - it might come in a package along with other nearby attractions.
