There are 2 known hot spring areas in Kaigata district of Tarumizu city, Kagoshima prefecture. Kaigata Onsen was developed in the beginning of the Showa period along the coastline. Back then it was on par with other popular hot spring resorts like Ibusuki and Kirishima, but there is little left of its past glory now. However, the hot spring water is still the same as before and is considered the best in Osumi Peninsula.

A recommended inn in Kaigata Onsen

One of the best hot spring inns in Kaigata Onsen is “Koyokan”.

Its top-class delicious dinner includes shabu-shabu (sliced meat boiled and dipped in sauce) made of Kagoshima black pork and sashimi with yellowtail caught off the coast of Cape Sata, the country’s southernmost cape. You can visit Koyokan also as a day-trip hot spring – many local people do it in the evenings. The facility is especially popular among women and you can always hear laughing voices coming from the women’s bath.

Regular visitors enjoy a genuine hot spring

Back then this used to be a bubble bath for water massage, but it has been decided that “a genuine hot spring doesn’t need that” so now there’s only hot water coming out of the source. The bath has been turned back to a natural freely flowing hot spring where you simply enjoy the hot water. This place is regularly visited by locals who tend to be quite picky about quality hot springs.

Guests of the inn can use a private indoor bath or a private open-air bath

Besides the gender-separated baths, guests of the hotel have access to the private open-air bath. Of course, once again 100% natural freely flowing hot water is used.

The water is alkaline, thermal and sulfuric with good effect on the skin. The feeling of the water touching and embracing your skin is fantastic.

The open-air bath is made of rocks of various sizes. From here you can see Kagoshima Bay’s symbol, Sakurajima volcano! This combination of top-class hot water and magnificent view will make you completely relaxed.

Koyokan Inn was built 70 years ago and is known for its good location, fresh seafood, vegetables and fried chicken, but its best asset is definitely the hot spring. This is a genuine hot spring which was once known as one of the three best hot springs in Kagoshima prefecture. No water or heating is added, and there’s no circulation, which makes this a pure 100% freely flowing hot spring.

In closing

This is without doubt one of Kagoshima’s best 10 hot springs. You will understand why when the silky water touches your skin.
