Vacationing in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, a mere four hour car ride from Manhattan, is like entering a fairytale dreamland. Lake Cayuga, one of the eleven Finger Lakes, so named because their long sinuous shapes are reminiscent of fingers, stretches out in its pristine blue splendor, offset by the green trees surrounding the shores. Staying at the Cayuga Lakefront Inn just outside of Ithaca, New York, is an ideal place to enjoy total relaxation in the lap of luxury and an excellent jumping off point for touring the area. Rooms range in price from 125 USD to 300 USD depending on season and size.

The Cayuga Lakefront Inn is actually a house with several bedrooms of varying sizes and a common area, kitchen, and patio overlooking the lake. There is an additional villa that can be rented in its entirety for larger groups. Unique furnishings, many of them antique, some art deco, fill the rooms of the inn. The interiors are both colorful and pleasing to the eye. Books and magazines can be found on many of the occasional tables and nightstands, displaying the innkeeper’s eclectic interests and outlook on life, adding to the intriguing nature of this accommodation.

Comfort with a view

The room we stayed in hosted a very comfortable queen size bed, with a side anteroom complete with sofa and hammock. The bathroom was outfitted with a large stall shower and lovely toiletries as well. All rooms at the inn have a lake view, and ours was no exception. Because we were in a ground-level room, we could walk out of the sliding doors to a patio furnished with a wrought iron table and chairs, as well as a comfy lounge chair, enjoying lake as the day turned into night.

Breakfast of the gods

The breakfast served at the Cayuga Lakefront Inn is unique, and each day is one of a kind. The innkeeper, Diane, is able to accommodate all dietary needs from gluten free, to vegan to kosher, all with a smile. The coffee is fresh, the farm fresh eggs are made with love, and each plate is a feast for the eyes. Vegetables and cheeses are organic and delicious. Make sure, when making your reservations, to include breakfast and specify your dietary requirements.

Hot tub heaven

Not to be missed is the outdoor hot tub facing that fabulous lake view. The water was hot, the jets were strong, and the nightscape of the lake with lights twinkling reflected on the water was out of this world, matched only by the galactic wonders of the sky above. It was hard pulling ourselves out of the hot tub, but the warm robes provided by the innkeeper certainly helped us as we walked the few steps to our room.

Ithaca dreamland

The Cayuga Lakefront Inn, is most definitely “the” place to stay when exploring the wonders of the Finger Lake region. Convenient to hiking trails, waterfalls, micro-breweries, wineries, and the lake, it is hard to tear yourself away from the luxurious inn to begin a day of sightseeing. Allow yourselves an extra day or two to be spoiled in this heaven on earth.
